Oscar nominee Octavia Spencer joins high-concept sci-fi thriller Snow Piercer

Despite getting praised for his 2006 creature feature, The Host, Korean director Joon-Ho Bong is not exactly a household name. But that might change with his next project,  Snow Piercer, especially after now adding Octavia Spencer to the cast of the indie sci-fi thriller.

Ms. Spencer is currently riding a wave of attention for her Oscar nominated performance in The Help. She’s already won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for the same role. THR reports that she will be joining Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton, as well as Korean actor Kang Ho Song, who also starred in The Host. And if that cast was not enough to get excited about, then the film’s intriguing story should catch your attention:

Adapted from the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, this film is set in a distant future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that circles the globe endlessly, powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves, based on the various sections of the train but not everything is in harmony, and soon revolution stirs.

Spencer’s character will be one of the passengers who gets caught up in the throes of revolution, in order to save her son. Production on the film should begin at the end of April.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped watching horrible Michael Bay movies, he could be as much of a hardcore film geek as me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a South African movie blog with the man your man could be as big a film geek as. What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it. It’s a warm box of freshly popped popcorn, butter melted awesomeness wafting in your face just like you like. Look again, the popcorn is now diamonds. Anything is possible when your man stops watching Michael Bay movies. I’m on a horse.
