Russell Crowe to be Robocop?!

Before you start losing your minds, please be aware that there is nothing concrete about this story at this point. It’s still very firmly stuck in the realm of speculation, but it is interesting.

Yesterday, we brought you a story of how Darren Aronofsky wanted Russel Crowe for the lead in his long-in-development biblical epic, Noah. It was also mentioned in Wednesday’s edition of Extras that Jose Padhila’s Robocop reboot was finally going ahead, now that it has found it’s writer. But last night, a tweet from Variety’s Jeff Sneider hinted at something else entirely:

Thus far no other confirmations about this claim has surfaced, but Mr. Sneider, as his Twitter handle implies, is an industry insider who often gets scoops like this. Though, this could of course be nothing more than the studio and director expressing interest in Crowe, which also does not imply that they would actually get him for the role.

The biggest problem with this rumour though, is that Crowe has just recently begun official negotiations for a leading role in screen writer Akiva Goldsman’s directorial debut, Winter’s Tale, which the director wishes to start filming in the 3rd quarter of the year. While MGM – now that they have a script writer in place – has expressed a desire to kick off production on Robocop in June or July. See the problem?

Personally, I actually hope that the scheduling conflicts can be resolved and that he does get it. This hope is not only fueled by the fact that Padhila’s intention to focus more on the dramatic transitional period between policeman Alex Murphy being gunned down and him being turned into Robocop, would be perfect for an actor of Crowe’s caliber though. No, I just want to see him get angry and throw a telephone into ED-209’s robot face!

I’m on the fence about this one. Yeah it can be great, but watch the original 2 again. Those movies were pretty perfect. Without Paul Verhoeven I don’t see this succeeding at all. Verhoeven’s style together with a pretty good cast and
Basil Poledouris’ score made the original 2 masterpieces.

I hope Fassbender gets it though.
