Naomi Watts signs up to play Princess Diana

Well, the British sure do love their female politicians and royalty. Meryl Streep has been receiving accolads for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the Iron Lady, which disappointingly was not an Iron Man spin-off film, and now it seems that the late and beloved Princess Diana will be getting the big screen treatment next.

Naomi Watts has signed on to protray the former Princess of Wales in a big-screen adaptation that will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, under the name Caught in Flight.

Currently searching for funding in Berlin, the film will examine the final two years of Diana’s life, exploring her quest for emotional happiness as she became a human rights campaigner on an international scale.

Watts described the role which she accepted as ”an honor to be able to play this iconic role. Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her onscreen.”

Hirschbiegel said that Watts was capable enough an actor to bring “the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”

Because he's the writer that The Movies deserves, but not the one it actually needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can't take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a loud-mouthed journalist, a watchful procrastinator. A dork knight.

Good casting that. They already look a bit similiar and after hair and make-up, I’m sure the resemblance will be uncanny.
