Sony says goodbye to "The Boys"

With the rights to make a film based on a comic book being snapped up quicker than an Internet obsession to make dead celebrity jokes, a few titles are bound to dwell in development hell or receive a booting at the end of the day.

One such property is “The Boys”, a Garth Ennis penned comic book series that deals with a CIA group who police super-heroes, putting them down if necessary.

And now Sony has decided to ditch the project.

Adam “Anchorman” McKay was developing the property for film, but much like many other high-profile comic books lately, Sony decided that The Boys was not worth the risk of investing cash into, effectively shelving the film.

McKay is still optimistic however, that a retooled script could get interest reignited in the film project, as Seth Rogen, Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay have already contributed changes to it, as McKay explained to Film School Rejects.

“It’s not dead. Two studios very interested. Love Sony but they made a mistake,” McKay said. “It’s now PG-13. But I found cool ways to keep it edgy. Nolan does so much with that rating. I want this movie to have the conceptual floor of MIB: the police for the superheroes, with the bad ass action groove of The Matrix or Oldboy.”

Badass action is one thing, but The Boys is infamous for pushing certain boundaries, with molestation, bestiality, nazism and murder being just a few of the topics covered in its sixty-odd issue run.

Perhaps its for the best that The Boys won’t be seeing the light of day any time soon, as a PG-13 version would just dilute the essential experience. Now if HBO would option it for a TV series however…

This should be a TV series instead. So should Preacher. 2 hours will never do these properties any justice…
