Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Earlier today, we mentioned the High King of all of Geekdom, Joss Whedon, discussing his upcoming Avengers film. Well here’s one more soundbite to add to the list. As some of you may have noticed, Iron Man has a new set of armour. And now Joss tells us why:

In his continuing effort to prove to us that he can pretty much act in anything, Tom Hardy is apparently going to produce and star in a violent film about biker gangs.  According to Variety, the still untitled film will take place in 1960’s San Francisco, and see Hardy as a returning Vietnam war veteran who forms his own gang. There is no release date as of yet, while Mark L Smith (Vacancy) has been tapped to write the script.

There’s a new poster out for Wes Anderson’s weird coming of age tale, Moonrise Kingdom. And it’s every bit as offbeat as its source:

Saying that I am fond of Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, is like saying that Lindsay Lohan is just fond of cocaine. So when reports surface that the film will be getting a 3D Blu Ray release, I suddenly start casing banks and raiding my wife’s stocking drawer so that I can finance the new 3D TV I suddenly need. There’s only a bootleg announcement trailer out so far, but that’s good enough for me:

And the stockings were for my head not my legs. Clear?

I took one look at the poster and trailer for Eddie Murphy’s A Thousand Words, and immediately knew that I would probably have more fun pouring live fire ants into my ear canals. And it appears that I may just have been right. After 39 reviews on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Eddie Murphy’s latest horror comedy is sitting on a big fat 0%. Yes, zero.

Now, that does not make it unique as there a few other films that have achieved this dishonour, the most recent being the 2011 Adam Sandler penned Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. What places this film in the lead for “Worst film of all time”  is that the 39 reviews are comprised of a fairly signification portion of established professional film critics, and they all appear to be in agreement that the film is utter bollocks. Here are a couple of choice quotes:

“Everyone in the film seems to be living in Stupid High-Concept Movieville”

“With A Thousand Words, Murphy plunges headlong back into the swamp of insipid comedies he’d just crawled his way out of.”

“Only the most masochistic connoisseurs of the truly awful need check it out”

There’s a new clip out for John Carpenter’s upcoming sci-fi film, Lockout. There’s nothing dramatic on display here, but it just reiterates Guy Pearce’s character as the smartass badass, who’s as proficient with his wit as he is with his hands. What’s surprising though, is that apparently co-star Maggie Grace also appears to be capable of giving as good as she gets.

2012 is undoubtedly the year of the Fairy Tale, as we’re seeing adaptations from everything from Snow White to Hansel and Gretel. Some of them look pretty good, while others *COUGH*tarsemsingh’ssnowwhite*COUGH* not so much. One adaptation that I wasn’t really paying attention to but which has suddenly jumped on my radar is Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent. Its going to be a retelling of the tale of Sleeping Beauty but told from the perspective of the Evil Witch, portrayed by Jolie herself.  Why this movie has suddenly garnered my interest is the reports from MTV that Elle Fanning has been earmarked for the role of the narcoleptic Princess Aurora.

Fanning impressed me immensely with her utterly believable performance in Super 8 last year, and I’ve been interested in seeing what she does next. Let’s hope and pray that she doesn’t follow in big sister Dakota’s footsteps, who went from crazy talented child star to obnoxious screamer to… well, Twilight.

When Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the massively popular Halo games was eventually put on indefinite hold, it was a sad, sad day. Especially when you consider what director Neil Blomkamp – who was once in the running for directing the film – was able to do with his Halo short film, as part of the game’s marketing.

Since then, many talented young film makers have taken it upon themselves to continue the trend of awesome short films. The latest entry is Halo: The Fallen, which is from the same guys that did the geektastic Halo: Helljumper series. This is just the prologue video, but you can expect more awesomeness soon:

Apparently that video took a measly $200 to make, which just once again begs the question: Why the hell has nobody made a full length feature film yet?!

*sniff* I really don’t want you guys to go *sniff* but I guess you’re going to have to. It’s just that things are still pretty quiet around these parts, and it’s still another 2 days before everybody is back. *sniff* Even wanton panstlessness is no longer cheering me up anymore. I guess, I can now finally sympathize with Kim Jong-Il.

John Carpenter’s directing Lockout? Uh…no.It’s just very similiar to his Escape From New York, is all.

It’s directed by James Mather, and Stephen St. Leger
