Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We kick off today with a geek tattoo of note. Let’s just forget the fact that Luke apparently has a dislocated left shoulder, or that Darth Vader appears to be a short fat guy, and just marvel at the dedication this Star Wars fan has displayed here.

And just like I predicted (and was hoping for) it appears that Chloe Moretz has landed the lead role in Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Pierce’s Carrie remake. The news broke via the 15 year old actress own twitter feed as she excitedly tweeted:

“Never been so happy in my life! Thank you Kim Peirce and thank u MGM for the chance of a lifetime I will never forget!”

Like I said yesterday, she is perfect for the role as she has the acting chops to easily inhabit both the light and dark places that the role will require.

Ever wondered what half a million dollars worth movie posters would look like? Well wonder no more! A bunch of vintage and rare posters from 1931 was recently discovered in Pennsylvania, and a few nights ago they went under the hammer at a local auction. The posters brought in an eye-watering $503, 000 in total. Ebonically speaking, that’s a whole lotta cheddar!

Grey Smith, Director of Heritage Vintage Movie Poster Auctions had this to say to THR about the posters:

“These posters are among the rarest, most sought after ‘Holy Grail’ pieces. The Public Enemy one sheet picturing James Cagney and Jean Harlow is particularly stunning and has never been offered at auction and the Little Caesar one sheet is one of only two known copies, making this a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the right collector.”

I have to admit though, the posters are stunning, and had I half a million dollars lying around… Well actually, if I had half a million dollars lying around you wouldn’t be reading this article as I would be stretched out on a private beach somewhere being served grapes that were individually peeled by a nubile Scandinavian ice skater.

It’s not everyday that a statement from Michael Bay has a calming effect on my psyche, but that’s apparently just what happened. After reports began surfacing that the the TMNT reboot would just be titled “Ninja Turtles” many people, me included, immediately began to worry that the loss of the “Teenage” adjective was a sign of another significant change. But according to this statement Master Exploder himself, we have nothing to worry about. Well except the fact the film might suck of course.

“Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

MICHAEL”

I love the fact that he signs his name all in caps. That right there tells you everything you need to know about Michael Bay.

Collider recently spoke to Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson about Wrath of the Titans and found out how they feel their characters have changed, what they wanted to fix from the first film and which scenes were the most challenging. While I clearly disagree with Collider’s positive take on the film, it is nonetheless a pretty interesting interview, especially since Neeson even briefly talks about his highly anticipated Taken 2.

Marvel’s marketing approach to The Avengers has been to bombard us relentlessly with a tsunami of images, video clips and tie-ins. In comparison, the marketing on it’s comic book rival, The Dark Knight Rises, has been like a leaky tap that only drips when you’re just about to fall asleep. So every time something new comes out for Chris Nolan’s final installment of his Batman magnus opus, I go all giddy, despite the fact that the marketing is so slim. Case in point, the art to be used for the film’s standee posters which is, in my opinion, simply gorgeous. They’ve been leaked courtesy of users ‘Namod’ and ‘kvz5’ over on the SuperHeroHype Forums.

One film that is right near the top of my list of film to see in 2012 is also one that has got very little publicity thus far. Only God Forgives is the reteaming of Ryan Gosling with director Nicholas Winding-Refn, and after the sheer understated badass magic that the pair accomplished with Drive, I cannot wait for this one. The film tells of Julian (Gosling), a former kickboxer and gangster living in Bangkok, who gets caught up in a crazy web of violence after he goes out seeking revenge for the murder of his brother at the hinds of a vicious police lieutenant.

Clearly all that violence takes it’s toll on the character, judging by this newly released on set pic of Gosling. The actor certainly looks like he has been through a meat grinder, but don’t worry ladies, his pretty boy looks are still intact as that is all just make-up work.

The first footage from director James Cameron’s record breaking deepsea exploration of the Mariana Trench (the deepest spot on Earth) has been made available courtesy of National Geographic. Admittedly the footage doesn’t show all that much, but I can’t help but get excited at this type of science geek adventurism.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of a short film is “any film not long enough to be considered a feature film”. That may sound horribly ambiguous at first read, but not after viewing this 5 second – Yes, 5 second! – long short film by Lee Hardcastle. In less time than it takes some people to even type out his name, Hardcastle has managed to imbue his film with elements of both horror and comedy. It’s a remarkable achievement, and one I heartily recommend that you give a viewing. Besides, it will only cost you 5 seconds.

And on that abrupt and brutal note, I’m calling it quits for the day. I need to reach out to my contacts to find out how get my hands on that Batman standee poster. Positioned in the just the right location with just the right lighting, it could serve as the world’s cheapest but coolest burglar deterrent.
