Extras! Ridley Scott says Prometheus should be rated R, Movies as code, Pirated Dragon Tattoo Blu Ray disc art confusing customers,and How Pulp Fiction should have ended?! Plus much more!

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

I always try to include at least one geeky thing in the Extras, but I have a feeling that it’s going be a damn long time before I can find something to out-geek this little discovery I recently made: Movies as Code. Clearly somebody has watched the Matrix movies just one or maybe thirty seven too many times. However as strange as the concept is, if you have a little programming know-how it’s actually quite hilarious at times.

Here are a few examples of what I mean:

There are 2 new videoblogs out over on 007.com showcasing new Bond girls Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe. Based on these videos, it certainly looks like Harris’s character “Eve” is going to be a capable and kickass kind of girl who can hold her own in most situations. Marlohe is just going to be hot.

Ridley Scott previously indicated that he would film both a  PG13 and R rated version of his highly anticipated science fiction movie, Prometheus, and then leave the decision in the hands of the studio as to which would become the theatrical release. Well, just 2 months away from the film’s release and that decision has still not been made yet, but based on this statement the director gave Empire, it’s quite clear what version he would like to see released:

Right now I don’t know where we are. The question is, do you go for the PG-13, or do you go for what it should be, which is R? Financially it makes quite a difference, or the risk makes quite a difference, and yet you also have to apply the question — if you soften it, will you financially suffer? As opposed to just going for the throat and gambling. Essentially, it’s kinda R. The little bastards will still get in anyway, so what’s the difference? It’s not just about blood, it’s about ideas that are very stressful. I’m not an idiot, but I’ll do everything I can to get the most aggressive film I can.

I certainly hope that he gets the R rating, as I’m not a fan of films with mature content being kiddified up just for the sake of ticket prices. Ah, who am I kidding… This is Ridley Scott. Hollywood worships the man, so he’ll probably get what he wants.

I just love Tarantino’s chronologically confused Pulp Fiction. It’s an incredible piece of film making from start to finish, and I don’t there’s much that can done to improve it. Well, at least I thought that until seeing this:

Despite the fact that it’s still very much in its infancy here in South Africa (mainly due to archaic geography based content restrictions), video streaming is kind of a big deal in the States. Just how big you ask? Well apparently in 2012, for the first time, it will be a bigger deal than its physical media counterparts.

This is according to a recent study done by the IHS Screen Digest, which estimates that 3.4 billion movies will be streamed online legally through services like Netflix in 2012. Thats already more than double the 1.4 billion of last year. But the real dealbreaker is the projected figure of only 2.4 billion movies to be watched on DVD/BluRay. For those of you whose maths have deserted them at the late hour in the hour, that’s a difference of 1 billion movies.

The likely cause for this marked increase in online viewing? Cold hard cash. The study found that the average cost per online movie was just 51 cents whereas as their physical media versions worked out to $4.72 per purchase.

I’m not the biggest chocolate lover around, but by Xenu’s nipples, this looks freaking tasty. Tasty and uber-geeky. I give you the Mmmmmmillennium Falcon:

You know what’s pretty cool? LEGO. You know what’s even cooler than LEGO? The Dark Knight Rises. Combine the two, and hell, you’ve just gone and reached antarctic penguin pimp levels of coolness:

I think it’s safe to say that I wasn’t too enamoured with Total Recall’s teaser trailer for a trailer. It’s not that the film itself didn’t look interesting, because it did, but it’s just the principle of the thing. It’s a ridiculous marketing ploy that has to stop before it becomes a trend. I actually would have been way happier if they had just ditched that tactic completely and instead just released this motion poster, because essentially that’s what a trailer for a trailer is.

And finally… Have you seen the disc art for the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Blu Ray release? In a rather clever and insightful move, Sony decided to design the art to make it look as if lead character, computer hacker Lisbeth Silander, had made it herself.

I think it’s a very clever however, it appears to be too clever for some as retailers been getting flooded with complaints from consumers who think that they had just been duped into buying a pirated copy of the film. This is has been happening so frequently that it has required retailers like Amazon and Redbox to start posting disclaimers on their sites.
