Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Thanks to self-proclaimed front page of the internet, Reddit, there’s currently an image bouncing around the net which – if some are to believed – is the viral marketing vanguard for a reboot of 1983 gang flick, The Outsiders. The original starred a slate of top young 80’s talent, some of whom you may have heard of before: Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe and Diane Lane. Oh and also that crane-kicking Italian boy from Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio.

The original saw Macchio’s Johnny Cade spark off a vicious gang war when he fatally stabs a rival gang member who is assaulting his friend, Ponyboy. And as can seen by that gritty piece of street art, somebody is clearly still holding a candle for Ponyboy and judging by the fact that next year marks the film’s 30 year anniversary, it is likely that we be in for a remake.

While I generally respond to remakes with the baring of canines and much hissing, this is one that I feel could actually work. The problem is that Hollywood will more than likely cast Channing Tatum and Rihanna in it.

With all the Avengers hoopla, it’s easy to forget that unofficial geek overload, Joss Whedon, has another project on the way shortly. Cabin in the Woods, the horror-comedy written and produced by Whedon, will soon be upon us. Thus far the early buzz for the film, co-written and directed by Cloverfield director Drew Goddard, has been immensely positive, with many praising Cabin’s deceptively simple setup. What appears to be a stereotypical horror story filled with usual predictable tropes is apparently turned on its head with some clever plotting.

Now thanks to ShockTillYouDrop, you can have a look at this 4 minute featurette on the film, in which Whedon answers questions from fans about the film’s tone, inspiration and much more.

If it feels like you’ve been waiting for this film for ages, that’s because you have. It was done shooting in 2009 already, but then shelved for a number of different reasons, one of which was allowing then relatively unknown lead Chris Hemsworth to get some more screen exposure due to his turn at Kirk’s dad in Star Trek. A ploy that appears to have really paid off.

I’m still waiting to see confirmation whether this is just an April Fool’s Day prank or not, (if it is, somebody is getting smote with the wrath of Odin!) but there is a story making the rounds that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels may be reprising their roles as bumbling idiots Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne as early as early as this September. While a sequel to Dumb and Dumber has been talked about for years, Carrey has always been too busy to do it. But according to Peter Farrely – brother to Bobby and one half of the writing and directing duo behind the idiotic antics – the film could go into production in just 6 months:

“We’re getting set to shoot ‘Dumb and Dumber 2’ in September. It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.”

Now some of you may be thinking that Farrelly is trying to pull a fast one as there already was another movie, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, released in 2003, but that remarkably less funny film was actually not done by the original creators:

“We did not do ‘Dumb and DumbererThat was a studio thing. So we’ve always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, ‘We’ve got to do this thing again.’ He had just watched ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and he said, ‘This is the perfect sequel. Let’s do it.'”

Dumb and Dumber is a film that I’ve watched countless times, yet never fail to laugh at, so I cannot wait for this.

Look, I don’t think I still need to explain all this geek inspired art I post over here. All you need to do is bask in the awesomeness. Like XombieDirge’s amazing series of Star Wars inspired paintings.

It would seem that even superspies can be stopped by men with rubber stamps. Agent Vinod is an Indian film which sees a James Bond-like Indian secret agent thwart assassins and terrorists and eventually stop a Pakistani backed nuclear bomb detonation in New Delhi, has been given the boot by Pakistani Film Censors board for being too “anti-Pakistani”.

Vinod himself, star Saif Ali Khan, has come to the film’s defense claiming it showed both “good Pakistanis and bad Pakistanis” and that “there are people who want to be friends with India and there are people who want to create trouble in India.”

And because you know you want it, here’s the trailer for Agent Vinod. It’s got everything you want from a big budget spy movie and more: Hot girls, crazy action sequences, car chases and a suave spy pretending to be the captain of the 1983 World Cup Winning Indian cricket team.

There’s a list of 3 names flying around Hollywood. These names supposedly belong to the director’s shortlisted for the inevitable Captain America sequel. What’s surprising though, is that none of those names are Joe Johnston, the director of the first film. Despite some 3rd act stumbles, I felt he did a pretty good job, and so did most who had seen the film. So while, I wasn’t already convinced that he would return for the sequel, I would have at least thought that his hat would still be in the ring.

  • George Nolfi (writer for “Ocean’s Twelve”, “Bourne Ultimatum”)
  • F. Gary Gray (“Friday”, “The Italian Job”)
  • Anthony and Joseph Russo (“Happy Endings”, “You, Me, and Dupree”)

Johnson, with his classical pulp stylings, was a good fit for Cap’s WW2 adventures, but his modern story will be a totally different animal. But honestly, none of these guys are exactly people I would be running to immediately. Who would you guys like to see directing the Super Soldier next?

What do you get when you take Peter Berg’s (not really based on) boardgame adaptation, Battleship, with James Cameron’s soon to be rereleased in 3D, Titanic, with a little bit of dubstep (just to get the cool kids to listen of course) and throw them all together in a Youtube blender? You get this incredible piece of mashup greatness:

And finally… I’m pretty sure that there’s not a single student – current or past – who has never attempted to do some style of rudimentary animation in the corner of their text books. Mine always involved dueling ninjas, spaceships or skateboarders and I have even – pardon the pun – come across a few stickmen pornos in my time. But, irrespective of how highly detailed and anatomically correct the drawings were, they could never compare to Mr Ellis’ imaginative doodlings in this award winning animation from Danny Madden, Will Madden, and Jonathan Silva of Ornana Films.

And so we’ve come to the end of another day. I’m still trying to sort through the aftermath of April Fools Day, as my usual news readers/sources were bombarded with so much rubbish that it’s hard to pick out what’s real or not. Well, sort of. It’s sort of easy to figure out the story is a fake when it claims that THE EARTH HAS JUST EXPLODED!

I legitimately thought that Jeff Daniels was dead. Isn’t he dead? If he is, it’s going to make a Dumb and Dumber sequel a little hard to shoot.

Last time I checked he was very much alive.Just hasn’t really done anything besides a few bit parts here and there, hence why he’s schedule is so wide open.
