Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We kick off today with a new look at Johnny Depp as Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s new Lone Ranger film. This time the sidekick is sans eagle feathers, but he has brought along Dr. Gayle Dine’Chacon, Surgeon General of the Navajo Nation, so I guess that evens out the Native American scales.

Have you accidentally deleted a document you were working on for work? Felt crap, right? Well imagine how crap you would have felt if you just inadvertently deleted the in-progress workprint of Toy Story 2 and there was no backups to be found? As outlandish as that may sound, that’s exactly what happened, according to one of the new behind the scenes stories told on the film’s blu-ray release (courtesy of LA Times).

Apparently Pixar had been storing the film on a Linux based file system, which unfortunately has a keystroke that allows for the rapid deletion of the entire file system. The very same keystroke that was accidentally entered by an unnamed Pixar employee. And since Murphy is a ruthless son of a bitch, the erasure of years’ worth of work happened just as the company experienced a major corruption of all their backups. Just like that Buzz and Woody’s second adventure failed to exist.

In a gigantic stroke of luck though, one of the technical advisers had recently had a baby resulting in her working from home, and thus had made a copy of a large number of the film elements. The Pixar guys had to rush over to her house, confiscate her computer and use it to restore all their work on the film.

Damn. I’m never going to feel bad about “accidentally” deleting all those “important mails” from Gavin again.

Dear Wife, if you’re reading this, here’s what I want for my birthday. That is all.

There’s apparently a new poster out for The Amazing Spider-Man. I threw “apparently” in there, because word is still out on whether it’s a fan made job or not. Personally, I’m hoping and praying that it is indeed just the work of some fan with a copy of photoshop and a brown paper bag filled with cheap alcohol, because by Crom, that tagline is horrid.

Writer/director/geek overlord Joss Whedon recently spoke to Collider about some of the scenes that didn’t make it into the final cut of The Avengers and will be available as DVD/Blu Ray extras.

Film.com’s Eric Snider takes a look at 10 Universal Truths We’ve Learned At The Movies. Personally, from my many years of life experience, I can vouch for this one:

1. If there’s only one person with a British accent, that person is the villain.

That is 100% true for movies and real life.

I absolutely love Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is in my consideration the greatest science fiction film ever made. I also love LEGO, as it was my first real geek obsession as a kid. But clearly I don’t love these two things anywhere even close to as much as Jason Allemann. No, he loved it so much that he took a full year to build a LEGO set that includes a six-foot-long, 3,873-piece, 1:60 scale model of the Discovery One, as well as capturing the iconic “Dawn of Man” scene. You can have a look at some of his crazy love down below, and go check out the rest of the set OVER HERE, including a construction guide for the Discovery One.

If you’re a fan of Star Wars and/or things that are funny, then you need to watch this hilarious video highlighting everybody’s favourite white-armoured, cloned, weak minded cannon fodder.

Those were totally the droids we were looking for.

Have a look at this elegant minimalistic poster for Danny Boyle’s Sunshine created by Travis English. Not much else to say except that it’s so purdy:

Filmophilia takes a look at the Best/Worst Nicolas Cage movies. Though to be fair, that could read as the Best Times Where Nic Cage’s Crazy Works/Worst Nicolas Cage movies. Also, I know that The Wicker Man is Cage at his most unhinged (THE BEEEEEESSS!!),which is why it tops their lost of worst films, but I have a special hatred for the slow-motion bowel movement that is Windtalkers.

With all the fuss being made recently about age ratings for such films such as Bully, I think it’s time that we scrap the old system and start afresh, and I think that I may just have found the perfect replacement system:

Seeing as how we kicked off today with an insightful look into the mind of arguably the best of Hollywood’s current generation of directors, it’s only fair that we end on some wise words from one of it’s most celebrated elder statesmen. Steven Spielberg’s career is about as decorated as you can get, so when the man behind such iconic pieces of cinematic history as Jaws, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Schlinder’s List, Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan offers up some advice, then you damn well better be taking notes.

And thus I have to bid you adieu! I’m off to try and build that 2001 Discovery One LEGO set… So Darryn will probably have to cover Extras for me for the next 13 years then.

  1. Find someone else to cover this post.I’m trying to bake that R2D2 cake, and I’ve somehow managed to set some water on fire in the process.
