Now let’s be clear here, this all still firmly entrenched in the realm of hearsay. (This is looking very likely now. See update below!) These particular pieces of gossip comes to us via AICN who got their info via an unnamed, yet (according to them) very plausible source.

If these rumours do turn out to be true though, then chances are you won’t be able to browse a website without it being thrown into your geeky faces, but until then you may want to avoid boldly going where no STAR TREK SPOILERS have gone before.

SPOILERS ON THE PORT BOW!

Yep, according to the source, Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing none other than iconic villain Khan Noonien Singh. Originally portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in a first season episode of the original series and then again in the 1982 feature film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the genetically engineered, time displaced tyrant is widely considered by many Trekkies to be the best of all the Star Trek villians, and considered by everybody else to have the barest of chests and Macguyverest of mullets.

The source also reveals that Khan and Captain Kirk will be engaging in deep space fisticuffs. No word as of yet on whether the space suits will have a peek-a-boo chest cutout.

Another rumour bone that was thrown our way was one that has been hinted at for a while now. Just last week, when asked about whether or not we will be seeing his Spock-Prime (From the original Star Trek timeline. Please try to keep up) again, Leonard Nimoy responded to CNN with an in intriguing “We’re talking.”

Turns out that more than just talk was going on. Well, at least that’s what AICN’s source would have us believe, as he/she states that Nimoy will indeed be reprising his role. There’s no word on how involved his role would be though, and judging by the fact that shooting has been going on for a while now already, and that less than a week ago Nimoy himself seemed uncertain about it, I have a feeling that it will probably be no more than a cameo.

UPDATE: Now Trek Movie is also reporting that Cumberbatch will be playing Khan, and since they’re getting the heads-up from totally different sources, this does change this from hearsay to being pretty credible info.

  1. And contrary to popular belief, Montalban did not wear a prosthetic chest for the film. That bareness was all him.
