Hope is lost in the new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises

Just a single day after we got a viral teaser, unexpectedly dropping in from out of nowhere like… well, Batman actually, comes this third and final trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. Just like the entirety of the promotional campaign for Chistopher Nolan’s final installation in his Caped Crusader trilogy, the new trailer is a bit of slow burn, but when it hits the the halfway mark and Batman shows up in full costume and Catwoman comments on his car and…

Well, I think you better see for yourself.

There appears to be some very deliberate choices made for this trailer, which is pretty par for the course for Nolan. (I have a feeling that he probably spends the first hour after waking meticulously planning out his morning constitutional). The sombre score, the desolate shots, the dreary colour palette all are chosen to evoke a severe sense of hopelesness. Hell, Christian Bale’s utterance of  “Not everything, not yet” even sounds to me like a man who is facing his timely end. Just what is Bane going to do to Bruce Wayne to bring him to the edge like that?

A couple other observations:

  • In a blink and you miss it scene, you catch a glimpse of Christian Bale engaging in tonsil hockey with Marion Cotillard. This obviously lends even more weight to the rumours that, despite what the casting sheet says, she will be playing the role of Talia al Ghul, daughter of Batman Begins villain Ra’s al Ghul and also Brucie’s baby momma in the comic books.
  • Also, I might be wrong about this, but this may be the first time we’ve seen any hint of Catwoman and Batman working together. Historically, the leather-clad cat burglar has always walked the legal tightrope very carefully, but thus far all the promo material has just shown us her more villainous side. And obviously, her more curvy side as well.
  • And lastly, just who the hell is John Blake? Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Gotham City police officer certainly seems to be fairly involved with the story for a character whose sole Batman lore appearance thus far was in a colouring book as a kid who got picked on by the Jok… Oh, wait. That kind of makes sense.

This movie is going to suck, too much of “INCREDIBLE”.
Darling Companion will have to do that weekend. 😛
