Although Elijah Wood will always be most well-known for his role as the blue-eyed, troll-footed hobbit, Frodo Baggins, in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, it was his insanely creepy turn as bespectacled cannibalistic serial killer Kevin in Sin City that really grabbed my attention.
And now he looks to be returning to that dark territory with Maniac, donning a pencil thin moustache (which as most women will tell you, is like, twice as creepy) in a remake of the 1980 slasher film.
This Cannes debut trailer features uncensored nudity, a violent scalping or two and even mannequins (they freak me out with their lack of genitals), so you’ve been warned.
PLEASE NOTE: The trailer is slightly broken and has the final few seconds cropped. This is a problem with the upload on the Cannes website. We’ll replace it with a higher quality, error-free version once it becomes available.
Synopsis:
Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
It may end up being a little too arty for some, but I find it intriguing. I especially applaud director Franck Khalfoun’s (P2, Wrong Turn at Tahoe) decision to film most of the movie from the killer’s perspective, literally.

Alexander Aja is in the production credit. That’s always a good sign. And he’s helping fellow Canadian talent, so I’m amped.
