Mads Mikkelsen to come under the hammer as a villain in THOR 2. May be joined by The Enchantress

Although he is one of my favourite actors living today, Mads Mikkelsen is not exactly a household name. I have a feeling that come Novembver 2013 though, a lot of people will suddenly take notice. You know, those people that still haven’t taken notice after his deliciously villainous turn as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, after he was one of the very few redeeming factors about Clive Owen’s dour King Arthur or even how he managed to carry an entire film as the brutal Norse slave One-Eye, without saying a single bloody word, in Valhalla Rising.

According to Variety, the celebrated Danish actor is currently in talks to be facing off against the God of Thunder as one of two – yes, two – villains in Thor 2. I think I may just have to do a happy dance now.

As to which villain he would be portraying, well for that we have to look to the other part of this story: Bleeding Cool recently announced that had reached out to some very reliable sources for some information on the film. And while they weren’t ready to reveal everything they had learnt, they did have this to say:

“Some of it we have to keep under wraps for now, but I can say, and with the utmost confidence, that you should expect to see The Enchantress in the film.”

The Enchantress (also known as Amora) is a powerful goddess and sorceress that harbours an unrequited (and sometimes psychopathic) love for Thor and has frequently worked with the villain Loki in the past. We know Loki is returning, and while he will probably have a toned down role (I think double duty as arch-villain is enough for now), he could more than likely make his influence felt through the Enchantress.

Now all due respect to Mr Mikkelsen’s prodigious acting ability, but even I don’t think he’ll be able to pull off the green unitard and tiara, not to mention the blonde-wigged and push-up bra aided seduction, needed for the role. However, Enchantress has close ties to another villain which, despite the slight issue of Mads being literally half the man he is, would be perfect for him: The Enforcer.

This theory was later backed up somewhat by Cinemablend’s own sources.

“Our source tells us that while the Thor 2 project is still in very early stages and they don’t expect to start actually writing the script until the end of the year, internally producers are kicking around possible villains. In contention to face off against Thor are two characters named The Enchantress and The Executioner.”

The Enforcer is another Asgardian named Skurge, who has an obsessive love for Amora, which she frequently exploits to get him to do her dirty work, like trying to kill off whomever she views as her competition for Thor’s affections, which ties in perfectly with Marvel Studios exec Kevin Feige’s statement that Thor 2 will focus quite heavily on the relationship between Thor and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, last seen making goo-goo eyes at the Asgardian hero in the first film.

In the comics, both Enchantress and Enforcer were eventually banished to Earth by Odin, where they they would go on to join the Masters of Evil (In case their name didn’t give it away for you, they were a group of really bad people). However, Skurge eventually transcended his love-struck lackie role, nearly conquering Earth a couple of times, ruling an alternate dimension and eventually even becoming a bit of a hero in one of Thor’s greatest adventures when he joined the Thunder God and fellow god Balder to journey into Hel (the Asgardian underworld, hence the single “l”), to free a group of human souls that had become entrapped there. While trying to fight their way back out again, Skurge sacrificed his life while holding back the forces of Hel singlehandedly (WITH MACHINE GUNS!), so that a wounded Thor and Balder could free the souls. This sacrificed earned him the respect of his fellow Asgardians, and eventually his spirit was granted a place in Valhalla.

While they obviously won’t be able to fit Skurge’s entire history into the film, I do hope that screenwriters Robert Rodat and Don Payne show the character  and Mads Mikkelsen justice by not having him just be the Enchantress’ lapdog.

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped watching horrible Michael Bay movies, he could be as much of a hardcore film geek as me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a South African movie blog with the man your man could be as big a film geek as. What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it. It’s a warm box of freshly popped popcorn, butter melted awesomeness wafting in your face just like you like. Look again, the popcorn is now diamonds. Anything is possible when your man stops watching Michael Bay movies. I’m on a horse.
