STARSHIP TROOPERS is turning Japanese (I really think so) in this new trailer

Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers is a personal favourite of mine, combining a satirical and sometimes scathing look on society with gung-ho violence and camaraderie. Also, there’s like, lots of boobies. And while all the sequels that followed definitely paid attention to that list bit, they also sucked.

Now the franchise is being resurrected in animated form with Starship Troppers: Invasion, which sees all the original characters returning in a script from acclaimed animation and video-game writer Flint Dille (An American Tale: Fievel Goes West, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay) with anime director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) at the helm.

While the first trailer didn’t really show us much, this one gives a good look at a whole lot of the action that will go down, complete with those iconic Starship Troopers catchphrases (Come on you apes, you wanna live forever?!) shouted out by a now one-eyed Johnny Rico.

Here’s all the info from the official Starship Troopers blog:

Carmen Ibanez, who flew the Rodger Young in the first movie, is now captain of the John A. Warden (the battleship I introduced in previous blogs). Carl Jenkins, now Minister of Paranormal Warfare, takes over the John A. Warden for a deep space experiment – leaving Carmen livid and ship-less. Carl brushes off her vehement objections and disappears with the ship off into the vast nebula. When Carl and the ship go radio-silent, guess who orders a rescue mission? Yep…it’s big-time general/war-hero Johnny Rico.

As our film is set almost 10 years after the first movie, the big 3 are now in their mid 30’s and have somehow kept their relationships in tact despite deployments millions of miles apart. You will see their fragile yet strangely resilient relationship evolve in this movie, especially with Rico still a little soft on Carmen…and a familiar uncertainty about whether Carmen still reciprocates those feelings. We definitely paid homage to the original movie (in all sorts of ways), so we can’t wait to see how fans of the original respond to an awesome mix of nostalgia and “franchise update.”

Don’t forget about Roughnecks, the animated spin-off that appeared a couple of years ago.

The trailer makes this look… not good.

By all accounts this trailer is not very indicative of the quality of the series, especially just as far as animation is concerned. As to the story, it seems to be very anime-esque to go along with the visuals, so I’ll hold off judgement until I see it

The animation looks good, the framing of the shots not so much.
