Midweek Mouth-off: 3D vs. IMAX

They’ve both been called gimmicks but today we want to know which of moviedom’s 2 most prominent “immersive” formats you would pick if forced to choose: 3D or IMAX? (Alas, the 3D IMAX combo has never made it to South Africa). Or, alternatively, do you dismiss both as blatant excuses to milk cinemagoers of extra money.

For the record, this month marks the 2nd anniversary of IMAX shutting down in South Africa… and right now I’m very bitter that I won’t be able to watch either Prometheus or specifically-shot-for-IMAX The Dark Knight Rises on the massive screen. In this debate, I’m throwing my support firmly behind IMAX. Size matters.

The question should dimply be: do you want a dulled, desaturated, off-focus image that leaves you with eye-strain, or do you want an amazing movie experience? 😉

I think Gareth just ended the discussion. I have to agree with him. 3D doesn’t look good, and so far the only movies where it has been effective (in my humble opinion) is with CGI flicks.  But, even then, the movies are dark, and a lot of detail is lost to the ether.

I’ve been lucky to experience both when watching Avatar. There is no better way to experience either, so I have to settle for both.

    IMAX for sure
3D is great with some films, specifically animated films made specifically for it, but other than that 3D is just better quality 2D film with stuff flying at your face.
IMAX is fantastic (large) quality picture which makes going to watch movies at theaters a wonderful experience.  It’s why you go to the cinema instead of waiting for it to be released on dvd or blue ray so that you can rent it. (unless it’s an eagerly anticipated title)

My only problem with IMAX was that unless you had decent seats in the middle, you ended up playing cinema tennis, looking first one way then the other.
