Russo Brothers are set to direct CAPTAIN AMERICA 2

Well, this is certainly a surprising turn of events.

The last we had heard there was a shortlist of possible directors for Captain America 2 going around, and that that list contained 2 fairly decent choices in F. Gary Gray (Italian Job, Law Abiding Citizen) and George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), while the third choice, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, seemed like a bit of an odd duck as they predominantly just had comedies like You, Me and Dupree, Welcome to Collinwood and Community on their resume.

Turns out that Marvel have a thing for uneven mallards then, as it’s being reported by Variety that the brothers Russo are currently in negotiations with Disney about helming the superhero sequel.

What makes this choice even stranger though is that all previous indications are that this sequel will be a lot darker than it’s predecessor, with star Chris Evans even describing it as more of a “political thriller”. According to an industry insider close to the negotiation talks though, the Russo siblings apparently impressed Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige immensely, despite their lack of experience with all things non-funny and big budget.

“Kevin [Marvel Studios’ president of production] is a ‘vibe guy. He likes to see if he gets along with people before he’ll decide about spending the next two years with them. And apparently, they hit it off with Kevin in the room.”

Marvel have made some pretty inspired directorial choices for their films thus far, so while they may have winning personalities, the Russo’s clearly must also have pitched some kind of definitive vision for the film that Marvel likes a lot. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, though it has been rumoured several times – especially given Bucky Barnes’ off-screen fate in the first film – that this film will see the introduction of the Winter Soldier (A cybernetically enhanced Barnes, brainwashed by the Soviets, and kept in cryostasis in between assassination jobs) as the primary antagonist.

Supporting this theory are returning screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFreely’s assertions that the film will be flashing back to the WW2 period again. Since Cap had no further involvement in that era after his Arctic swan dive, it stands to reason that they would only be returning to that era to show the fate of other characters.

Feige previously also had this to say about how Captain America 2 will spin off from The Avengers:

“The primary storyline [for Captain America 2] takes place post-Avengers, Steve figuring out his place in the world. Tony goes back to Malibu, Thor goes back to Asgard, but there are a number of people who stay in S.H.I.E.L.D. Steve, for the time being, is going to be one of them.”

With a 14 April 2014 release date already set, and with all the expected FX and set design work that will probably be involved in the film, I’m guessing that the Russo’s will probably be getting to work on this pretty soon.
