Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Just as I joked about the lack of anything Prometheus yesterday, we get two new clips to make up for lost time. While opinion on the overall film is still pretty divided, nearly everybody agrees that the movie sho’ was purdy. A lot of those bells and whistles was created courtesy of acclaimed design studio WETA, and now they’ve released these featurettes breaking down the VFX on the film’s opening scene, as well as the landing of the Prometheus itself.

Oh and if haven’t seen the movie, then you might want to avoid all SPOILERS by mosying on down to the next bit of randomness.

Azerbaijan is getting an IMAX. Azerbaijan, people! Their main export is xenophobia towards homosexuals!

South Africa, you disappoint me.

Musician turned filmmaker Rob Zombie is branching out out of his horrific comfort zone and will be doing an Ice Hockey movie about the Philadelphia Flyers next. He personally described Broad Street Bullies (that’s the title, by the way) as a cross between Rocky and Boogie Nights, which leads me to believe that these hockey players are all struggling to overcome the off-balance effect of their 13 inch penises, by running up stairs.

Twitter is great for keeping up to date with events through bite sized bits of news or gossip straight from the source. Also, you totally use it to track down the mother of the unborn future leader of the human resistance.

Ever wanted to know why it is that the theme from Jaws sets our teeth a-chattering and our bowels a-voiding? Well then look no further than Time’s scientific study of Why Scary Music Is Scary.

Here’s a new TV spot for Amazing Spider-Man which looks at how Peter Parker is destined for “Greatness”

Real Steel director Shawn Levy will produce a Sesame Street feature film for Fox. I’d pay good money to see a robotic pugilist beat the stuffing out of Big Bird.

FILM CRIT HULK LIKE DAMON LINDELOF. FILM CRIT HULK SMASH PUNY LINDELOF HATERS.

Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am’s customized Back To The Future Delorean for not having the proper registration plates. I’d like to believe that when the police pulled over Mr. Am, he responded with “Licence plates? Where we’re going, we don’t need licence plates!”

Dieticians would have you believe that carbs are evil. Were they perhaps thinking of this Evil Dead Necronomicon pizza?

Necronomnomnomnomicon?

The more Guillermo Del Toro reveals about Pacific Rim the more ridiculous my grin gets. You had me at giant monsters vs giant mechs. If you need some more convincing though, here’s the director talking (via CBM) about where some of this crazy battle royale takes place:

“We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger.”

“We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.”

The Wachowski’s highly ambitious generation spanning science-fiction ensemble epic, Cloud Atlas, has received an official US release date via press release of 26th October 2012, whereas International release has just been set to “Early 2013”.

The film will see the incredible cast of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Keith David, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant take on multiple roles through the time-hopping tale. Here’s the official synopsis from the press release:

“Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future.  Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

Comics publisher IDW is doing a Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover comic. If you don’t click that link, then just take that as scientific proof that we will never be friends.

Production officially got under way today on Disney Studios’ Maleficent and to commemorate, here’s a first look at Angelina Jolie in the title role.

You can cut glass on those cheekbones! The image was revealed via press release which also gave this description of the fairy tale.

Directed by two-time Oscar®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland”), in his directorial debut, and produced by Joe Roth, “Maleficent” is written by Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith and Palak Patel.

Co-starring in the film are Sharlto Copley (“District 9”), Elle Fanning (“Super 8”), Sam Riley (“On the Road”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Lesley Manville (“Secrets & Lies”).

This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.

Everybody has a bad day at the office so once in a while. Not even award winning thespians are exempt from this, which is why TopTenz looks at the Top 10 Embarrassing Movies Made By Legendary Actors. I would still like to know what kind of scandalous blackmail material Adam Sandler is holding over Al Pacino’s head, because that is the only reason I can think of why Pacino agreed to “act” in Jack and Jill.

Seven different versions of Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi classic, Blade Runner, have been released thus far. So hey, why not make it eight? Only this time, instead of actors or sets, recreate it using 3285 aquarelle watercolour paintings. You know, just because.
