You're going to need your seat belt on for this new TOTAL RECALL trailer

The Total Recall reboot is getting made no matter how much us fans of Paul Verhoeven’s original bitch about it, so the best we hope for now that this new one is actually good. Casting great actors and going back to the source material of Phillip K. Dick’s book instead of ripping off Verhoeven verbatim was always a good place to start for director Len Wiseman. But even with that and all the good looking action on display in the first trailer, I wasn’t entirely convinced.

Well, they got me now. And all it took was 3 little things.

The 3 breasted woman is back! OK, OK, I know that I shouldn’t get as excited for that as I am but… Actually, you know what? I should be getting this excited; it’s a three breasted woman! Besides for extra mammaries though, this trailer sure does sell the point that is going to be an amazing looking film , filled with a whole lot of big budget, widescreen action spectacles.

My concern though lies behind in the camera in director Len Wiseman, who at times in his career has shown a great visual flair, but when it comes to just telling a good story has shown about as much skill as exhibited with a home-made sex tape. He knows that there are some flashy bits that are going to get your attention, so he focuses as tightly as possible on that, everything else be damned. So, while the scenes on display here certainly look incredibly cool, I’m still not 100% sure that they’ll be more than just that.

Synopsis:

“Total Recall” is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

I have an issue here: the makers claim they are using the original story as the main source (which actually has Mars as part of its plot). But most of what you see in that trailer is from the Verhoeven/Arnie film. Why can’t they just admit that they are making a slick copy of the original, but dropping Mars to make it seem like they had an original thought beyond the new action scenes?

I predict that this will be explosive with action, but flat as a movie experience.
