Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Dredd 3D had a special preview screening at Comic-Con two days ago for those lucky few in attendance, and thus far the buzz has ranged from decent to amazing. Even the reviews at the lowest end of the spectrum all agree that this film is about 20 000 times (a rough estimate) better than the Sylvester Stallone travesty. Oh and violent, they’re all saying it’s really really violent.  Want to know how violent, then check out this new Red Band clip which also shows off the time warping effects of the drug Slo-Mo.

There is an Internet Cat Video Film Festival happening in Minneapolis next month. I’m not even going to add any witty remarks. That sentence has just left me speechless.

Slashfilm has a gallery up of 17 new character posters for The Hobbit. Unfortunately, they are just photos taken of the various posters on display on the Comic-Con floor, which is why I’m not posting them here, but as soon they get an official release I will.

Billy Elliot and The Hours director Stephen Daldry is being courted by Disney to direct the feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical hit, Wicked, which tells the Wizard of Oz story from the point of view of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

Oh by Odin’s gaping eye-hole! Madds Mikkelsen has dropped out of playing the villain in Thor 2, due to his commitments on the Hannibal TV series.

Apparently, Channing Tatum has even more to show you as the Magic Mike star is planning a sequel to the male-stripping smash hit. Magic Mike 2: Strip Harder? Magic Mike 2: The Magicking? Magic Mike 2: Even More Dudes In G-Strings?  (I expect my royalty checque to arrive any minute now.)

There are a couple of really ecstatic Twilight fans in San Diego today. Some dedicated fans have been camping outside the convention since Sunday (Yes, Sunday!) and were rewarded with their dedication by a visit from none other than Stephanie Meyer herself along with some of the cast members.

You probably noticed that I didn’t take my customary dig at the Twihards, and that’s only because had that been a Star Wars convention I’d have been right there on that sidewalk, neck deep in the crazy.

And that wasn’t the first Stephanie Meyer surprise of the day either, as earlier in the day as fans were filling out during the end of the The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 panel, Meyer returned on stage to offer fans a sneak peek at her next film adaptation, The Host. And I have to admit, it sounds interesting.

Clearly, somebody over at Sony has just discovered how to use Photoshop recently, as what could not have been more than a 15 minute hack job has produced this new poster for Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot.

The Man With The Iron Fists will officially be punching your eyeballs out of your face on November 2nd. Oh my face can’t wait!

A new Skyfall IMAX preview was shown excusively at Comic-Con, giving us some new plot details. Unfortunately, there’s no video of it online (hence the “exclusively” part earlier), but ComingSoon.net was there and gave a description.

At the start of the trailer, we learn that M (Dame Judi Dench) was responsible for a drive that contains the names and locations of every British Intelligence Agent stationed across the world. That drive has now gone missing.

Following the character’s first image reveal yesterday, Ben Wishaw’s Q is seen in action. We watch him meeting Daniel Craig’s 007 for the first time where he tells Bond that, with his expertise, he can accomplish more on his laptop in his pajamas in ten minutes than Bond can in the field in an entire year.

There’s lots of actions scenes, including quite a few shots of Bond fighting someone hand-to-hand on the roof of a train car. Later in the trailer, we see the same car being torn apart (while it’s still moving) by a pursuing construction crane.

Of course, there a number of franchise mainstays: we see the classic 007 Walther PPK, the original Aston Martin and we get to hear Craig say, “Bond. James Bond.” along with quick flashes of Naomie Harris’ new Bond girl, Eve.

Dammit, I’m drooling on my keyboard again. Stupid Bond fanboy auto-response.

Shock Til You Drop has scored these up-close pics of the Pacific Rim suits from the Comic-Con floor. There’s a word to describe them, and it rhymes with Mad Jazz.

Probably in attempt to not break the internet in half with nerd rage again like earlier in the year, Peter Jackson will be showing off footage of The Hobbit at Comic-Con in just plain ol’d 24 fps instead of the 48 fps he used at CinemaCon. Based on how much he’s been pushing 48fps as the future, this may seem like a bit of buckling under pressure from Jackson, but speaking to LA Times, he explains why he made the decision:

“I think it’s more about protecting the downside, rather than helping the film in any significant way. There is a huge audience waiting to see “The Hobbit,” and any positive press from Comic-Con will truthfully have little impact on that. However, as we saw at CinemaCon earlier this year, with our 48 frames per second presentation, negative bloggers are the ones the mainstream press runs with and quotes from. I decided to screen the “Hobbit” reel at Comic-Con in 2-D and 24 frames per second, so the focus stays firmly with the content and not the technical stuff. If people want 3-D and 48fps, that choice will be there for them in December.”

There’s a new trailer out for Halo: Follow Unto Dawn, the webseries leading up to the highly anticipated video game Halo 4 and which will be released along with some extra scenes as a feature film. As a huge Halo fan myself I am going to forewarn my fellow enthusiasts that you may need to stock up on some clean underwear before clicking play on this one.

Apparently yesterday’s Expendables 2 panel was the place to be at Comic-Con, as not only was it wall to wall badass, but apparently the well-matured action heroes brought the house down with their antics. JoBlo was there and covered it all, but here are some of the hilarious highlights.

– Stallone claims action movies today suffer from “male pattern badness.” Each generation has to create their own heroes to fit the times, but today’s action stars have “Velcro muscles” where they’re aided by CGI and effects and not actual stunt work.

– Arnold also said he and Stallone are such a good match because they have so many things in common, like muscles, physical fitness and the fact that nobody can understand them. “Sly was my English teacher when I came to America. Blame him. [does horrible Stallone impersonation]”

– In ROCKY IV, Stallone told Dolph to go for realism and really hit him. He punched Sly so hard they had to fly him to a hospital where the doctor thought he was in a car accident. Stallone told him he got hit by a Volvo.

– Everyone admitted that a villain is just as important as the main team and they thought Van Damme really brought it. Arnold claims he was doing six foot leaps the day he got there.

– Crews and Schwarzenegger worked together on THE SIXTH DAY and Arnold said he’s gained an unbelievable amount of muscle since then. He even mentioned ogling Crews in the gym, before realizing how that sounded.

OK, it’s official. This is the greatest Batman related thing you’re going to see all week. (And you’ve probably seen a hell of a lot). I’m not going to spoil it, so just click the button.
