And the hits from Comic-Con just keep on rolling in. This time we get a little bit of magic as the first trailer for director Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful has just dropped last night. So step onto that yellow brick road (actually just click the link below) and join James Franco as he’s off to be the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz!

I suspect that the whole aspect ratio change and fade from black and white to colour is just for the trailer and won’t be in the final film, but either way it’s a very nice homage to the famous scene in the classic 1939 Judy Garland version, where the film also swopped from black and white to Technicolor when Dorothy first crash lands in Oz.

Other than that, the trailer is far too short to get a real feel for any of the actors/actresses in their respective roles, but it sure does look like we’re going to be getting some jaw dropping visuals. They seem to have used their modern CGI wizardry to also give the backgrounds an almost painterly look, which is once again, a very nice touch and nod back to original from Sam Raimi.

There are few scenes though that look they’ve been shot expressly for 3D, which worries me a bit as I prefer the use of the technology to rather be used for immersion rather than gimmicks. But hey, that’s not going to turn me off seeing this one. Anything with Rachel Weisz in a figure hugging black dress gets my attention.

Synopsis:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

I was thinking that from the start of the trailer. Seeing the name subsequently appear in the trailer made me shudder. But the presence of Raimi and Franco gives me hope.
