Zug Zug! Sam Raimi logs out of WORLD OF WARCRAFT movie!

Sam Raimi’s been so busy over the last while crafting magical worlds for his Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, that it was easy to forget that he was also chosen to bring another world of magic and strange creatures to life. That world of course being the video game money-making juggernaut that is World of Warcraft.

But that project has now stalled, with the director announcing his exit from it. This is all quite disappointing, as this movie was probably our last hope of getting those WoW players to actually go outside.

While speaking to Crave Online about Oz at Comic-Con, Raimi broke the news that despite the fact that he and Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat had managed to accumulate a 40 page working document of ideas about the film back in 2010 already, they still couldn’t get the script right. And since Raimi’s calendar was rapidly filling up, some decisions had to be made.

“Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.”

The “they” over there being Blizzard Entertainment, the publishers of the game. Interestingly enough though, Blizzard has not said a single damn thing about a replacement director, or in actual fact, anything about the project at all in the last two years., which means that either they’ve staffed the entire project with mute ninjas, or there’s actually nothing going on.

I will admit, I was always incredibly skeptical about the success of a WoW movie, until I saw the massive inter-creature battle at the end of the first Chronicles of Narnia movie, containing a lot of the same types of animals/creatures found in WoW, which suddenly had me realizing that this could actually work. But alas, this looks like another project that will probably just spend its life on a shelf. Ah well, I guess it’s back to the Mountain Dew and Cheetos.

  1. This news doesn’t surprise me at all. A WOW film seems doomed to dwell forever in development hell. I actually thought Raimi’s Oz was destined for the same fate until all the pics and trailer surprised me.
