ABC developing a TV series based in the Marvel Movie Universe?

The Avengers made (and is still making) ludicrous amounts of money. I didn’t know it was possible to put that many zeroes next to each other, and still have it be a real life number. And if there’s one thing that a comic book publisher like Marvel knows how to do, it’s create spinoffs from a successful title.

We’ve been hearing for ages about a Hulk TV series being developed by Guillermo Del Toro for ABC, but now it looks like ol’ green jowls might soon have some more superhero company on the small screen.

Deadline reports that Marvel’s Television division has entered talks with ABC Studios to produce a live-action drama series set in what is now being referred to as “the Avengers universe” (which, from a comic book fanboy perspective, makes no sense seeing as there is an Avengers team in pretty much every single one of the various Marvel print universes, but I digress).

According to the article, the TV series is still very much just “a kernel of an idea” and while it may be spinning off from the Avengers, it will more than likely not feature any of the prominent characters from that movie. Instead many other scenarios are being touted, with a”high-concept cop” show being floated as one of the directions it may take.

This of course, immediately brings a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series to mind, something which Clark Gregg – Agent Coulson himself – was very vocal in his support for not too long ago:

“In a lot of ways, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson really lend themselves to a TV show because it’s normal people. It’s real people dealing with extraordinary things.”

Of course , the “and Agent Coulson” part might be a problem, seeing as how (And SPOILER ALERT for anybody that hasn’t seen Avengers yet. All 3 of you) he contracted an acute bout of deadness in the blockbuster movie. But the rest of the sentiment is spot on though, as S.H.I.E.L.D’s high-tech law enforcement styled adventures is the perfect blue-print for a TV series.

Also, with a S.H.I.E.L.D. series, Marvel would be able to showcase all their more lower tier characters who would never be able to carry a movie on their own without getting some mainstream exposure first. The biggest problem with a S.H.I.E.L.D. series would would of course be the fact that none of the Avengers’ principals are supposed to be making an appearance, and S.H.I.E.L.D. without Nick Fury just wouldn’t be right. But lets face it, getting Samuel L Jackson to make a few regular appearances would be relatively easy. The man accepts pretty much every script that’s put in front of him.

Of course, like I mentioned earlier, the cop show angle is just one of many ideas being tossed around, and for all we know somebody at Marvel is on the phone with Thomas Jane right now, wanting to talk about some Dirty Laundry.

Hey, a fanboy can dream, right?
