Let’s face it. The concept of He-Man is pretty ridiculous. And yet, I have a completely illogical love for both the 80’s cartoon and the 1987 live-action movie adaptation of Masters of the Universe. The latter featured Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, with hair more impressive than his physique, and Frank Langella chewing scenery, right through his Skeletor mask, like the set was covered in Spur sauce.

Director Gary Goddard’s film stands as a testament to the assertion that everybody was on drugs in the 80’s. Even us kids. And now a new young director has “stepped up” to bring the LSD kookiness of Eternia to another generation.

Jon M Chu has certainly had a very unconventional path to the position of action blockbuster director, having begun his mainstream career directing Never Say Never – the Justin Bieber documentary not the unofficial James Bond movie – and then followed up by Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. A betting man would have given him some pretty bad odds when it came to doing anything other than entertaining prepubescents, but instead he somehow landed the gig of reviving the G.I. Joe franchise with the currently delayed G.I Joe: Retaliation.

Clearly that means he is the perfect choice to direct a movie about a dandy prince who looks like he was dressed by his baby sister, who with a swing of sword transforms into a heroic barbarian that looks like he’s headed to a gay pride parade. Clearly. Deadline reports that he is currently in talks to direct a new Masters of the Universe script by Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Musketeers) and Mike Finch (Exclusively Yours).

The Masters of the Universe concept has seen a huge number of interpretations over the last few decades, and there’s no word yet on whether or not their script, which had been previously floating around Hollywood under the title Grayskull, would be a complete revamp again or draw inspiration from either the 80’s cartoon, the 1987 live action movie, the 2002 rebooted cartoon, or the new comic book series that just launched from DC Comics in June.

Either way, looking at Chu’s music and dance based filmography, I’m hoping that he will draw some inspiration from this:

Ok Ok, I’m sorry. No need to break out the pitchforks and torches. Maybe “ridiculous” was too strong a word. I LOOOOOOVE the old He-Man cartoons (I love Bravestar even more, I’ll have you know), but having rewatched some of it not too long again, I realized that they were super super cheesy with, but despite that fact, I couldn’t help grinning like an idiot all the way through it.

EVERYTHING in the Eighties was super-cheesy. Even Predator.

Yeah, that’s my point. It was (and here’s that word again) pretty ridiculous, but we loved it anyway.

There’s a lot of myth and legend around how the He-Man back story came to be. One is that the whole thing was clobbered together after Mattel realised their Conan figurines were made for a very mature movie. That’s probably not true, but it’s a nice tale.

The original comics that came in the toy boxes has the best plot – Skeletor is from a race of inter-dimensional invaders who arrives to pave the way for said invasion and He-Man is a bad-ass barbarian type who kicks his ass. The canon we know today was created for the original TV series.
