GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is moving ahead. But without Bill Murray. For real this time

When it comes to news of Bill Murray’s involvement in a third Ghostbusters film, I feel like I’m the one stuck on Groundhog Day. The veteran funnyman has shown ambivalence several times about whether or not he would not be interested, to which co-star Dan Ackroyd would respond by promising to have a better script that will get him back on board.

Well, it now finally seems like that song and dance is over. Ghostbusters 3 is getting made without him. Clearly, Dan Ackroyd ain’t afraid of no lack of a lead actor.

Speaking to Metro, Ackroyd had this to say about the film.

Is Ghostbusters 3 finally happening?
Yes, we’ve got a brilliant new writer on it and we’ll be passing the torch on to a new generation. We’re working on it to make it just right to satisfy our fans. I’m confident we’ll be in production in the next year.

It’s been a long process, hasn’t it?
Yes, but now we’ve got the studio on side. We’ve tried a few concepts which weren’t right but now we’ve got a good structure and will make it happen.

Is Bill Murray doing it?
No, I can tell you he won’t be involved.

How do you feel about that?
It’s sad but we’re passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn’t seem to be coming and we have to move on. It’s time to make the third one.

Well, that’s about as definite an answer to Murray’s involvement as we’ve got thus far. And that “brilliant” writer that Ackroyd mentions is Tropic Thunder and Men In Black III‘s Etan Cohen. It’s not sure whether his draft of the script included Murray’s character Venkman and whether changes would have to be made now, but I’m just happy that the production is finally getting some impetus.

My only concern is that besides for Sony getting Etan Cohen on writing duties, nobody else has said a single word about this film except Dan Ackroyd. Is he the only one even interested or pushing to get this made? And since he’s no longer what you might call a Hollywood heavyweight, does he have the clout to get this made properly?  All that “new generation” talk is making me think that this is going to be nothing but the old gang having glorified cameos to set up a new, younger and inexplicably more attractive group of guys (and girls) for a possible future franchise.

And I’d rather have no Ghostbusters than a half-arsed, studio mandated cash-in.

Mr Murray has always been an ass, a brilliant ass, but an ass none the less.
