Joe Carnahan's Daredevil pitch has stalled as character moves back to Marvel, but it would have been amazing

It’s pretty much official except for the paperwork; with talks of Fox and Marvel doing some character trading being dismissed as just rumour, the clock has run out for Fox’s rights to the Daredevil character. The blind hero will now finally be finding himself at home at Marvel Studios.

Unfortunately, a side effect of this custody battle is that it looks like fan favourite writer/director Joe Carnahan’s supposed “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” pitch for the character is dead in the water. But if these test reels that Carnahan created for the film are any indication, we might just have missed out on something really cool.

The director announced the stalled status of his Daredevil reboot pitch on Twitter last night:

“Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone’s side.”

He then followed that up by tweeting out two sizzle reels (one NC-17 and another PG-13) that he created using footage from other films, comic book pages and a couple of custom filmed scenes which he had pitched to Fox.

And if you were as impressed with that as I was, then trust me, we’re not alone in this, as apparently the guys at Fox loved it as well, there was just one little problem:

“DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went t*ts up.”

At this point, now that the character is back under the domain of Kevin Feige and co, it’s uncertain if they would be open to Carnahan’s take. I for one would love to see it happen though, as it certainly hews much closer to some of the character’s greatest comic book runs by writers such as Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker, than that Ben Affleck disappointment of a film a few years back.

ANYTHING would be awesome when compared to that other movie. How it even got a spin-off is beyond me. At least Colin Farrell was fun to watch…
