Prometheus on Blu-Ray will include 15 minutes of deleted footage

I never saw Prometheus. There, I admit it. Thing is, I do still want to see it, and after several scathing reviews, my D-senses were tingling something fiercely, which made me decide to rather wait for a Blu-Ray release that might have some extra footage on it, resulting in a possible first-time viewing that I could enjoy.

Looks like that waiting might have been worth it.

Seeing as how the film had one of those allegedly open endings, it looks like quite a bit of footage was left behind in the editing rooms. Quite a bit in fact.

Bleeding Cool did some maths, and found out that the upcoming cut of the film that had been submitted for classification could have 14 additional scenes running the length of 35 minutes added, as well as an extra 15 minutes being thrown into the third act.

You can see for yourself in the track titles from the upcoming Blu-Ray yourself, so needless to say, there be spoilers here:

SPOILERS MAN! SPOILERS MAN! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

GET AWAY FROM THE SPOILERS, YOU BITCH!

IT’S A SPOILER! ASH IS A GODDAMN SPOILER!

  • 00:01:22:01 WE’RE NOT ALONE ANYMORE
  • 00:02:57:01 STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

I’m writing this without looking at those titles, so judge for yourself. Still, hopefully this new footage improves upon the film, and makes up for that apparently head-scratchingly stupid ending, that has had Kervyn in a coma for several weeks now.

Did I miss something? Is it 15 or 50 total extra minutes of movie spliced back in?

Sounds like 50 to me – which is a lot. It might be worth taking a look at to see if the changes shift any context. That much footage might suggest an entire sub-plot that was removed.

I agree, something similar to the Directors Cut of Kingdom of Heaven which was leagues ahead of the theatrical release.

Nah, the film has fundamental problems that made people hate it. But if you ignore the obvious flaws, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. Better than any other sci-fi I’ve seen so far this year.

It’s directed well, acted pretty decently for the most part, looks really good and starts by asking some interesting questions. And wrt, I agree, it is good. Unfortunately when it comes to the actual script and character decisions, it’s dumb. Really, really dumb. So I don’t think added scenes would improve it more than the 3 stars I gave it. My problems were all script inherent.

It’s the last three minutes that annoyed me the most.

Pft, no. I found comments around the characters’ conduct rather elitist – it betrayed which people walked into the cinema with high expectations. Yes, they did dumb stuff, but if I had to judge movies based on their characters’ stupidity…

Or rather, if that is the main bugbear of the movie, I am still confused at the high scores this site has lauded on Battleship and John Carter. Yes, I still haven’t let go of that one.

I’m loathe to re-open this can of worms, but I don’t think it’s high expectations to expect characters that are not walking plot holes. You’re the guy who creates the map of the place, and tells everybody how you have a map of the place, and then 5 mins later you get lost just walking back out? That’s not even character stupidity, that’s just really bad writing to get a character into a particular set of circumstances he would normally never encounter.

And it’s all the other examples of bad writing like that that I had a problem with (like making Idris Elba a deus ex machina plot dump, despite his character not having any basis for him knowing the things he knows).

You’re right, the last minutes don’t line up with the established Alien mythos, and while in retrospect I would have preferred this to be a completely standalone story, I cannot criticize that aspect too much until I see where Ridley takes the story in the next part so that we can see the true relationship between this film and what came before.

I agree – it had plot holes. But so did Battleship and John Carter. Huge I-could-put-my-elephant-through-it plot-holes. Why is Prometheus getting so hammered, but these other films were given a pass?

It’s because you all really wanted Prometheus to be something special and you are attacking it on the basis that it fell well short of those – not within its own merits.

Look Battleship, I agree with. John Carter, like I explained before, was a very special case for me. I looked past a lot of it’s flaws because of the almost nostalgic feeling it evoked in me. I haven’t really done that with any other movie, it was a single case.

And while I’m not going to get into Noelle’s 1 star of Prometheus, I felt I gave Prometheus a fair score. I praised it for what I liked, and I criticised for what I didn’t. I didn’t make up these negative things. They were there on the screen for everybody to see.

True. But everyone is going on and on and on about the script. Yet if you look past that, it’s not a bad movie. It looked good and largely used the premise of the world created in Aliens to great effect.

It’s a bugbear with me: this level of pedantic moaning from fans who didn’t get what they want, so they pretend it’s got to do with poor film-making. If you’re going to be a movie snob, at least be consistent and honest!

Bah, I just want more footage of Charlize being a bitch (with and without her flamethrower).
