Nicolas Cage has STOLEN some action movie ideas in this first trailer

Nicolas Cage’s name on a project is always a gamble, as you just never know which level of crazy (On a scale of 1 to Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) you’re going to get. And when the heavily and horribly photoshopped poster for Stolen – his next action film reteaming him with Con-Air director Simon West – was first released, it didn’t exactly inspire much confidence in filmgoers either.

Now the first trailer is out, so now you can see for yourself if he’s once again become un-Caged.

Firstly, while Ol’ Nic luckily seems to be emoting like a normal human being with full control of their facial features again, it looks like he and West have just created an okay-ish if by the numbers film, that is just rehashing ideas from other action thrillers. Essentially this is Gone in 60 Seconds with gold instead of cars, and with a little bit of Taken thrown in just for good measure.  This seems to be following the trend of Cage’s career in the last few years, where (besides for the exceptionally bad Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) he’s just been doing pretty middle of the road thrillers.

Secondly, I could physically feel my arteries clogging up due to the high level of cheesiness in that pseudo Don LaFontaine (Don LeFauxntaine?) voice-over. Eurgh.

Synopsis:

Will Montgomery (Cage) is a master thief who after being double-crossed in a heist gone awry is sent to prison for 8 years. Upon his release he’s ready to leave his criminal past behind and try to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter Allison. The FBI and his old cohorts believe that he hid the loot from the last heist 8 years ago, $10 Million in Bonds. To get his hands on it, his old partner Vincent (Lucas) kidnaps Allison and demands the entire $ 10 Million as ransom. Keeping her in the soundproofed trunk of a Taxi Cab, he’s able to stay mobile amongst the throngs of taxis out during Mardi Gras day making it nearly impossible to find.

Montgomery only has one day to get the $10 Million ransom but much to the disbelief of the FBI on his trail and Vincent, Will doesn’t actually have it. Instead, he must trust his instincts and his old partner in crime, the beautiful, sexy and smart Riley (Ackerman), to do one more clever heist to get his daughter back alive before it’s too late.
