Originality is definitely not an option with the announcement of a VIDEODROME remake.

Well, there you have it, folks. We might just all just pack our bags and move to … I don’t know. Somewhere where we won’t have to have our hands in the air, shouting “Why?!” up at the heavens and then foolishly expecting an answer. If we listen closely though, you might just make out the sound of Hollywood executives’s eyes turning into dollar signs with a cash register sound.

You guessed right – the remake machine has been re-saddled and another 80’s sci-fi classic has been deemed worthy of having a revamping – and early reports seem to indicate that this announcement isn’t being met with confidence.

The latest victim? Cronenberg’s classic sci-fi film Videodrome. If you haven’t seen it, Videodrome deals with the CEO of a television studio that discovers a secret signal being broadcasted that causes hallucinations. Now, we love a good sci-fi film and we love a good conspiracy but the latest script seems to have ditched the signal and opted for a “nano-technology” as the new focal point for said hallucinations.

A director has already been hired by Universal Pictures to helm the film and it is Adam Berg, a first timer, more famous for directing advertisements and music videos. This all comes as a bit of a shock, seeing as Total Recall barely managed to rake in more cash than Verhoeven’s original. With the script writer for Transformers 3 and 4 on board, I can be quite confident in saying that we are definitely in for another remake that reworks all the originality of the first film and churns out a bland, generic copy.

This is most unwelcome news. Most unwelcome indeed. That said, I would very much like to believe that Adam Berg has been chosen for a reason other than affordability and that a set plan is in motion. We will just have to wait and see.
