Oscar winning writer/director Steven Gaghan’s political thriller Syriana was an amazing sophomore directorial effort. You know, if you could actually figure out exactly what the hell was going on, besides for the fact that George Clooney was probably on his way to another golden statue on his mantlepiece.

Gaghan has been missing on the Hollywood frontlines for the 7 years since then, but now he’s back with a new film, Candy Store, and he might be just be letting a couple of high profile actors in for some sweet treats.

To my knowledge, despite being two of Hollywood’s most talented and prolific actors, Brad Pitt and Denzel Washington have never starred in a film together. Now THR reports that the two have entered talks to join Gaghan’s project. This should get any film fan’s attention, as the two perennial scene stealers could be about to have their vintage De Niro/Pacino moment, if it does come to pass.

According to reports also coming from The Wrap, Pitt will be looking to star as Mark Swain, an “elite, highly trained deep-cover operative who loses everything, ultimately disappearing into Brooklyn, where he must start again. He washes up as a beat cop, only to discover the global organization he was dedicated to fighting is also operating in his new backyard.”

The Wrap also reports that another couple of big names looking to join the cast are those of Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, who should be used to sharing plenty of screen time together, as the pair are currently busy teaching Leonardo DiCaprio some race relations over in Quentin Tarantino’s soon to be released Django Unchained.

Although the earlier plot synopsis hints at one man’s story, I think that based on the ever-increasing A-list cast and Gaghan’s previous Oscar nominated and Oscar winning scripts for Syriana and Traffic, respectively, it’s probably safe to assume that there’s more to that tale and that it will probably be making use of multiple, overlapping narratives.

From knowing absolutely nothing about it yesterday, Candy Store has suddenly leapfrogged up my list of highly anticipated movies.
