The heat is on, as Eddie Murphy may bring Beverly Hills Cop to TV

The heat is on! On television that is. It looks like Eddie Murphy might be returning to his Axel Foley roots soon, as the film that launched his career is now looking to transition itself to television, eager to show an entirely new generation of cops working under him.

And he’s got some impressive credentials to help shop that idea around, to various studios.

Murphy spoke of  the idea last year already, as a show which would see his son following in his unorthodox police footsteps, while Foley SR would have risen to the rank of chief of police.

Murphy is keen to reprise his role, albeit in a limited capacity, and he has Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield on board with him, to pitch the show to various television networks.

Sony Pictures is a co-partner so far, as Vulture described the pitch for the show as an hour-long buddy cop procedural show, with comedic elements attached to it. Speaking to Rolling Stone last year, Murphy explained his idea for the show then:

What I’m trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley’s son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit. I’d do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn’t be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong.

I’m keen to see Eddie Murphy don a familiar jacket and bust some heads, even if its for a brief moment, but then again, network television always likes to play things safe, so the final product may not have the necessary critical factors that made the original films so successful.

Still, we’ll have to wait and see whether Murphy and co get the funding to make a pilot, before we can judge anything too quickly. What do you think? A grand idea, or should TV stay far away from adapting film onto that platform?

And also, why is no one accepting that pitch for a new 48 hours later TV show that I stapled onto a drunk Nick Nolte to deliver to the TV bigwigs?

Keep it uncensored, with the same fun tone and a decent cast, and I’d watch it.

That is what I’m worried about. Eddie Murphy has become very family friendly the last couple of years.

Two of the best, and my favourite, buddy cop shows of the last year or two have been cancelled and they also happened to be the good ones:

    Terriers and The Good Guys.

For shame, tv world. FOR SHAME!
