Solid Snake has the silver screen in his sights

Walking in the footsteps of other video game adaptations like Tomb Raider and Hitman, it has been announced that Metal Gear Solid will be having its turn as a feature film. Hold on to your hats, folks, I have a strong suspicion that we are going to see a new wave of video game films in active development soon.

The plan was unveiled by Avi Arad, who also producer Spiderman and X-Men. If you don’t know anything about the Metal Gear Solid franchise, it follows perpetual badass Solid Snake as he spies and soldiers his way after the Metal Gear, a robot with nuclear capabilities.

While I’m not very familiar with the series of games, I know that it has loads of avid fans that will wail and tear at their clothes if the film isn’t done right but I have to say, when looking at other video game titles, its not usually in our best interest to be overly optimistic. I have a strong suspicion we will see something along the lines of G.I. Joe, which would be unfortunate as I think the film should rather draw inspiration from another eye-patched, badass Snake… Snake Plisskin. Perhaps Carpenter should be given the reigns?

Let the rumour mill start churning! Who do you think would make a good Snake? If only Kurt Russell wasn’t getting on in years…

That said, I would kill for another “Escape From …” film.

There was a time, a time before Wikipedia, when the local movie geek reigned supreme, when people believed everything they heard in film. This was an age when only men were allowed to watch feature films. And in Cape Town, one film geek was more man than the rest. His name was Lourens Corleone. Once, he ate a whole wheel of cheese. Everyone was impressed.
