Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

With just about a fortnight left until the release of Warner Bros’ latest DC animated movie, an adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic The Dark Knight Rises, the studio have released a new promo clip for the highly anticipated film. But this one is a little different as shows just how much of a nightmare for criminals Batman can be.

Apparently some British news outlets were running headlines last week hailing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a hero, as while shooting Fast 6 in the UK, he apparently foiled the plans of a couple of would be local burglars. Turns out though, that what actually happened wasn’t so much heroic as it was accidental, as the Rock told Empire:

“I’ll tell you what happened. Those guys are the unluckiest burglars on the face of the planet. Whatever they were doing was clearly thwarted, though not by my intention.

“We were outside. I was in my gear — flak jacket on, weapon drawn. There was a lot of noise and gunfire. Gina [Carano] and I are scaling a wall, we’re jumping down and running. And we’re in this shady area, where there’s a canal, which I’m sure is an access point for bad guys. So as we’re running we happened to scare, from afar, this bunch of miscreants. I was running in their direction but it wasn’t to them! They turned and thought, ‘Holy shit! Here comes The Rock and he’s got a weapon!’ And I was thinking, ‘I want to get this scene, so I can go home and eat.’ Just another Thursday in my world, fighting crime!”

Vince Vaughn sure has some good genes. Britt Robertson, the rather lovely star of The Secret Circle,  has signed on to Starbuck, the remake of the Canadian comedy of the same name, which will Robertson will play one of the 500 kids that Vaughn’s character unknowingly fathered with his sperm donations.

I’ve been passing out The Master kool-aid to anybody that will drink it, as with the genius trifecta of Paul Thomas Anderson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jaoquin Phoenix, it’s possibly my most anticipated film for the rest of 2012. One aspect of the film that I’ve been looking forward to the most was the soundtrack composed by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood, who also scored PTA’s previous masterpiece, There Will Be Blood.

Well now, thanks to Vulture, I don’t have to wait any longer but can listen to Greenwood’s entire skewed audioscape for the film below. You’re welcome to do the same.

Mexican born director Patricia Riggen has been tapped to helm The 33, a dramatic accounting of the true story of 33 Chilean miners that had the world’s attention in 2010 as they were trapped underground for 69 days before eventually being rescued…. Juan by Juan. (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Riggen is currently in Chile, meeting with the miners themselves to detail the never-before told story of their first 17 days, when they were completely cut off from the world. The miners had previously kept these details confidential as part of the “pact of silence”, as the director explains:

“I was riveted – along with the rest of the world – as the drama of 33 Chilean miners unfolded. It’s been an extraordinary experience to meet the miners in person and hear from them the detailed account of their time underground. Since their rescue a little less than two years ago, the real story of their incredible survival has gone untold. In their darkest hour, they struggled to maintain their unity. The collapse brought out the best and the worst in them. Ultimately, the human spirit triumphed and all of them came out alive. I feel honored to have the opportunity to bring their extraordinary story to the world,”

Joan Allen has landed the lead role in A Good Marriage, an adaptation of a Stephen King story, being penned for the screen by King himself. Here’s the synopsis for the short, which appeared in the anthology “Full Dark, Zero Stars”:

Darcy Anderson learns more about her husband of over twenty years than she would have liked to know when she stumbles literally upon a box under a worktable in their garage.

And in other largely unsurprising news, the Church of Scientology have apparently stepped up their campaign against Paul Thomas Anderson’s Venice Film Festival critical smash-hit The Master. The film’s lead Lancaster Dodd, played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman, was reportedly inspired by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.

The Russian edition of THR has got the scoop on a whole load of new Jack Ryan behind the scenes pics, including what is the first look at Kenneth Branagh’s villain. Somehow, I get the feeling that kids won’t be rushing out to get his costume for this Halloween though. “Screw Batman, I’m dressing up as an inconspicuous government official!”

Joss Whedon is over at 24 Hours talking about his plans for The Avengers 2. Clearly, he was very mum on specifics, but was still willing to paint some broad thematic strokes.

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

Besides for Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jaoquin Phoenix, the other thespian attracting praise for her performance in The Master is Amy Adams, and the young actress is over on Collider talking about her experiences on working with the two men. Unfortunately, it all gets rather spoilery, so it’s probably not a good idea to click that link quite yet.

However, close to the end of the interview, talk turns to Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel, in which Adams plays Lois Lane. She spoke about what that experience was like:

“It was great.  It was really good.  Henry [Cavill] – I hope you guys love him as Superman – worked so hard.  He is just yummy and really committed to the role.  He really did a good job.  I haven’t seen the final cut and I have only seen a couple of the teasers.  So I am with you guys.  I know it because I was there but there was so much that I wasn’t involved in that I can’t wait to see.”

She also spoke about whether her take on Lois Lane will be drawing on some of the more humourous past interpretations of the character, specifically her one-upmanship of Clark:

“No, I think she is a little more…we will have to see.  I don’t know.  I mean, she is definitely a pistol still and she definitely gets herself in a lot of trouble still.  But she is not as competitive, I would say, with Clark.”

It seems to be a musical day as Paul Leonard Morgan’s score for Dredd 3D has also found its way onto the net, and while nowhere quite as experimental and ethereal as Greenwood’s effort, it’s nevertheless still pretty cool.

Michael Bay is about to make some ghosts explode. The Master of Baysaster is teaming up with veteran X-Files writer James Wong for a new occult show titled, well, Occult. The show follows a FBI agent who loses the plot a bit after his wife disappears under creepy circumstances. After a leave of absence he rejoins the force and is partnered up with a straight-laced new female agent, who has her own paranormal past, and together they form a new task force to investigate aliens and UFO’s. Oops, I mean strange occult cases, not aliens. Totally not aliens and UFO’s.

With The Avengers having earned over $1.5 billion dollars already, you’d easily be forgiven for declaring writer/director/supergeek Joss Whedon as King of the World. Well James Cameron, the man who laid claim to that title first, is not all that impressed. So what if these superhero peasants made a lot of money? Everybody knows that you’re only in the cool gang when your film cracks the $2 billion mark.

I’ve been rewatching X-Files and while season 1-5 were amazing, it loses the plot completely in 6, rendering it almost unwatchable from thereon out. A new X-files-esque show is welcome news indeed.
