Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

While there are a number of clubs around the country, baseball is nowhere near as popular locally as it is in the States, so this new trailer for Jackie Robinson biopic 42 may not quite appeal as much as it does to our neighbours across the ocean, but it’s still pretty good. Especially since it’s got Harrison “I shot first” Ford in it starring as a man whom most of us have probably never heard of.

And for the record, we have our version of baseball here: Kennetjie. I want a kennetjie movie.

Here’s one to get all the geek hearts a-fluttering and a-sputtering. George R.R. Martin, the bestselling fantasy author that created the Song of Fire and Ice series upon which HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on, has told MTV that if given the option, he would like to write a Doctor Strange movie:

“…I did love Doctor Strange and if I was to write a Marvel character him and his dimensions would be it.

I’d separate him off from the rest of the Marvel universe and not make him part of a team. He doesn’t really fit any of that stuff, he’s a guy that shouldn’t even be known to the rest of the heroes, living on the edge of the Marvel Universe protecting the world and our dimension and plane from dangers and forces out there that the other characters like Spider-Man and The Avengers don’t even dream exist. He’s our wall against Cthullu and the Old-Ones and the dread Dormammu. That’s when Doctor Strange was at his best, Stan Lee and Ditko were [writing] him in just that manner.”

Marvel, give that man the option. Give it now!

And there go all my theories!  Lizzy Caplan, who plays Claire in the Avengers spinoff Marvel One-Shot, Item 47, has confirmed that she will not be reprising her role for Joss Whedon’s ABC TV series S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I can’t really. I have my own show so I will not be a regular on the Marvel ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show. But I’m glad people are so excited about that. I think it’s a good idea… Maybe I could do some little thing.”

There’s a new poster out for Hitchock – not to be confused by the other Alfred Hitchcock biopic, The Girl – which sees Sir Anthony Hopkins in the lead role as the master of suspense, and which riffs on Hitchock’s memorable greeting from his show. The film also got an official release date and will be in cinemas on November 23, 2012.

I’m sure that a lot of people get Paul T. Anderson (Magnolia, There Will be Blood, The Master) and Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil movies, The Three Musketeers) confused. That’s why Vulture has put together this handy guide at tell them apart. Here’s my technique though: I just think that the RE movies were, Well, Shit and I know exactly who is who.

Parker Posey and Milo Ventimiglia will be joining Nicole Kidman for Grace of Monaco. Parker will play Princess Grace’s scheming lady-in-waiting, while Ventimiglia will be absorbing everybody’s powers of tax evasion playing her publicist.

Matthew Fox is over on Collider talking about projects past present and future, such as Speed Racer, Emperor and World War Z, and also addressed how his crazy muscular look as the villain in Alex Cross came to be:

“I was in London doing a play there and Rob Cohen called me.  And I had met Rob on another project a few years back and we really just clicked in the room, just dug each other on a lot of levels, and both felt like – hey , you know sometime were going to work together on something.  And he called me and told me what he had in mind and initially I was like, [laughs] “Man, you know.  I mean I really didn’t, you know, sync” – Sometimes it’s just like “wow, it’s really interesting that you’re thinking about me for that.” But then I was really inspired by the way he talked about it, and what he wanted to do, and I said “Yes, but this is what’s going to have to happen.  I’m going to have to lose a bunch of weight.”

Because when I read the script, I really imagined this guy was kind of burning.  His internal dialogue and his rationalization of his philosophy were burning so intensely that he would just look like that.  Not because he spent any time in the gym, or because he was careful about his diet.  Although, I’m sure he only fuels himself with like very intense things.  But I felt that that was the image that jumped out to me.  So I said, “Listen, I have to task the film to get a meal plan for me for the next six months and a trainer.” And they found this guy Simon Waterson who works out of London and he kind of specializes in this notion of people who want to radically, you know, sort of alter what they look like.  And I met with him and he was the trainer, but both nutritionist and a trainer, and sort of set up this program.  And I just worked my ass off for six months and was really disciplined about some pretty intense dieting.  And I lost close to forty pounds.  And, you know, when I look at that image that was floated on the internet, it’s like that’s pretty much exactly what I had in mind.  I mean, I feel like I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish as far as what he would look like and how he would carry himself.  So I was pleased.”

Here’s the first image for Scary Movie 5 which sees Lindsay Lohan looking dazed and confused in Charlie Sheen’s bed. Yep, that sounds about right.

We all have regrets. Only ours don’t normally cost hundreds of millions of dollars. And while some actors just go on with their lives oblivious to the giant turd they’d just left behind, some are a bit more forthcoming. Which is why Pajiba has listed 12 Instances of Actors Admitting Their Biggest Career Mistakes.

Don’t worry Bob Hoskins. We regret the existence of Mario Bros. just as much as you do. Trust me, on this one.

Ex-Lois Lane and owner of a super-uterus, Kate Bosworth, will be joining Jason Statham and James Franco for the Sylvester Stallone scripted thriller, Homefront, which follows an ex-DEA agent (Statham) whose peaceful retirement is shattered when he crosses paths with a drug trafficker (Franco). Bosworth will play Franco’s meth-addicted sister who kicks off the feud, when her bully son gets put in his place at school by the DEA agent’s daughter, and the mom runs to her brother to get retribution.

Although it’s still a week to go before his jaw of justice hits our shores, Dredd is already proving to be a success overseas. The film’s screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine, The Beach) is thus of course already thinking about a sequel, and he’s got a couple thoughts about politics:

“From my point of view, the politics is a lot of what I want to get into,” said Garland. “There’s a lot of stuff that’s implied in the first film that you could really explore a lot more of in the second. Dredd is part of a police state. He’s a fascist”

“The subversives are sometimes the enemy in the comic books – there’s something really interesting about pro-democracy terrorists. Where the bad guys are the people fighting for democracy. Of course they’re not the bad guys, because you should be fighting for democracy. I would like to explore that.”

German site FilmStarts.de has scored some set videos for Fast 6/Fast and the Furious 6/That One Where The Rock Sweats on Vin Diesel’s Car Seats, shot in the Canary Islands where production is currently on the way on what appears to be a large car chase scene. Big surprise there. What is surprising though, is the inclusion of a tank. I can’t wait to see them drift that.

If you can’t speak German and find yourself lost on that site, you can also get the rest of the clips – which include a bit more traditional action with guys shooting guns at trucks – in handy English over on ComingSoon.net.

Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff will be following up her turn in Riddick by joining Doctor Who star Karen Gillen in Occulus. The film will see the age old tale of girl’s parents are murdered under mysterious circumstances, girl’s brother is convicted of the crime, girl thinks brother is innocent and that haunted antique mirror is obviously responsible for their death. A classic!

Veteran director and child-rape charge dodger Roman Polanski’s next film will Venus in Fur, an adaptation of the Tony Award winning stage play of the same name. Polanski’s own wife  Emmanuelle Seigner will star opposite Louis Garrel in this story about a play writer/director of a new play who is auditioning for his leading lady, when a talented young actress shows up and turns his life upside down.

An official plot synopsis has been revealed for 2 Guns, the comic book adaptation starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlbergh. While it does bare some Safe House similarities, it sounds like it could be fun:

Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down.

When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

There’s a new Skyfall ad out, only it doesn’t really have anything to do with the movie. Remember that $28 million product deal that Heineken signed up with Bond’s paymasters? Well this is the first of what will probably be many entries in that ad campaign. The ad features new Bond girl Berenice Marlohe, as well as Bond himself, Daniel Craig, who revealed that, due to MGM’s recent financial woes, these type of deals had to be struck to get the movie made:

‘We have relationships with a number of companies so that we can make this movie. ‘The simple fact is that, without them, we couldn’t do it. It’s unfortunate but that’s how it is. This movie costs a lot of money to make, it costs nearly as much again if not more to promote, so we go where we can.

Here’s Bond, no longer getting shaken and not stirred:
