I will neither admit nor deny watching the pop cultural phenomenom that is Glee, but I can guaran-damn-tee that there are hordes of “gleeks” that are not only proud of their showtunes loving selves, but will happily snap up everything with a catchy tune. So of course, being in the rolling around in the pile of money business, film studios will capitalize on this by bringing out new lighthearted musical romps, and one of the first will be the Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson starring Pitch Perfect.

It just so happens that the movie actually looks kind of funny. You know, if this is your thing and all.

Beca (Anna Kendrick) is that girl who’d rather listen to what’s coming out of her headphones than what’s coming out of you.  Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together, in the new out-loud comedy Pitch Perfect.

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college a cappella.  This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.

Loaded with new takes on old favorites to hits of right now that are seamlessly mixed together, mashed-up and arranged like you’ve never heard before, Pitch Perfect is directed by Jason Moore, who opened our eyes to the very misbehaved life of puppets in the surprise Broadway sensation Avenue Q.

The first few reviews for the film are starting to role in, and it seems like it’s a hit. The chemistry between the film’s rapidly rising lead stars, combined with a really sharp script courtesy of hit sitcom writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock, New Girl) apparently mixes to for one hilarious time at the cinema. With Kendrick diligently churning out solid performance after solid performance and now also possibly about to star as Steve Rogers’ love interest in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Rebel Wilson regularly quietly stealing scenes from her much more famous co-stars like she did in Bridesmaids, both are poised to break into the big time, and this may just be the movie to do it.

PS. Glee‘s Sue Sylvester, next to Abed from Community, is the greatest character on TV. Well, at least that’s what I’ve been told by people who actually watch Glee, that is.
