Hear a 90 second preview of Adele's theme for SKYFALL

James Bond theme songs are sort of a big deal to me. As a devout follower of all things 007, I have a very biased love for all of them. Yes, even that one from Madonna, much to my public shame. So when a new theme song comes out, it’s a bit of an event for me.

After being long rumoured, it was confirmed last week that pop sensation Adele would be providing the theme for Bond’s latest outing, and with just over a month until Skyfall hits our screen, we get our first taste of what the British songstress has cooked up.

The full track, written by Adele herself and producer Paul Epworth, will premier at 07:00 UK time (so 08:00 locally) on her official site as well as 007’s Facebook page on this coming Thursday, October 5th, aka World James Bond Day, to coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, Dr. No.

Until then though, a 90 second snippet of the son has been released along with this statement from Adele about her involvement:

“I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for ‘Skyfall. There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song. But I fell in love with the script and Paul had some great ideas for the track and it ended up being a bit of a no-brainer to do it in the end. It was also a lot of fun writing to a brief, something I’ve never done which made it exciting. When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be back combing my hair when I’m 60 telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day, I’m sure!”

Irrespective of what you may think about her music, there’s no denying Adele’s talent as a singer/songwriter. In an age where pop stars are manufactured more than they are discovered, Adele is a bit of a throwback to some of the greats of old. And that appears to be the case as well with this song.

While the previous two songs accompanying the new revamped Bond have both been rock driven , up-tempo affairs, this is definitely harking back to the smoother, classier days of Bond theme songs. The first 90 seconds may be a bit subdued, but the fact that it was recorded at Abbey Road studios with a 77 piece orchestral accompaniment means that it probably gets a lot more bombastic later on.

I really like what I’m hearing thus far (and this may just contend with Garbage’s “World is not Enough” for my favourite theme song of the modern era) but like I said earlier, I am rather biased in this. So what do you guys think thus far?

The ballsack incident was from Casino Royale. There’s not a single man alive who won’t cringe that scene.

I’ve always liked the cheesiness of the themes and the bizarre range of artists who performed them. Everything from Wings to Depeche Mode. But sadly a Bond marathon has pretty much drained me of appreciation. These days I just skip the credits.

There is a curious bit of commentary on the Dr. No DVD about the themes, where the man who wrote the Bond theme speaks about the creation of the opening credit and how he originally though starting the song halfway would be a mistake. Today that part is the distinct Bond jingle.
