We live in a crazy world, folks. A crazy, mad world where anything can happen … and now it has. Yes, it is official. I have now heard everything. You may ask, what has driven me to spew out all this whimsy? Three words. Besson. McG. Costner.

No, you didn’t read that last one wrong. Kevin Costner has been signed on as the lead in McG’s new action film, penned by none other than our favourite french man, Luc “The Fifth Element” Besson. I have to admit, this one is a bit of a lucky packet for me. I really doubt we will know what we are going to get until we know a bit more about it. Let’s break it down, shall we?

Firstly, we have Kevin Costner. We know he’s capable of an Oscar-winning performance but he also has a knack for starring in horrendous flops like Waterworld or The Postman. Luc Besson is just as much of a dark horse. When he is in the director’s seat he often manages to create, as with The Fifth Element, Angel-a or The Professional but when another director helms his project it is often a different story. There will be a lot riding on McG and I have to admit, I hope he manages to get this film right. I’ve often felt that he has potential as a fantastic director (to make up for his ridiculous name) but films tend to get away from him a bit and end up as a lot more messy than they should be, as the case was with Terminator Salvation. Hopefully with great source material and a veteran at the helm, he can bring the magic.

Comingsoon states the following regarding the film:

The thriller explores a story about Secret Service Agent Ethan Runner who discovers he’s dying and decides to retire in order to reconnect with his estranged family. But when the Secret Service offers him access to an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment, he soon finds himself trying to juggle his family, his mission, and the drug’s hallucinatory side-effects.

Well, that sounds like it could be very exciting. Kevin Costner on drugs? I vote yes!

  1. Oh god, let’s hope Costner doesn’t sink this film, like the set on Waterworld… *shudder…

I quite liked Waterworld. In fact, I have more faith right now in Costner than either McG or Besson.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Not only is Waterworld actually not a bad movie, it gets a false bum rap for being this massive Hollywood bomb, when it’s actually not.
It tanked at the US box office, but made decent money everywhere else, and ended up making nearly $100 million in profit.

If you really want to look at a crappy Kevin Costner big budget turkey, then look no further than The Postman.
