The NYCC wasn’t just all cosplay cleavage and undead nightmares, there was also some news regarding Marvel’s Phase 2 of their cinematic universe. So because we know how much you hate to overwork your mouse hand, we’ve collected them all in the nice handy one-stop shop post for you. Aren’t we nice?
First bit of news is that after years of being in development, Edgar Wright’s formic superhero tale, Ant-Man, has finally received a solid release date. The tiny hero will be shrinking onto your screens on 6 November, 2015, which is actually 6 months after The Avengers 2 gets released on May 1, 2015. Yes, technically that makes Ant-Man a part of Phase 3, but we’ll just let that one slide for now.
Along with the announcement of Ant-Man’s release date came the news that Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World would be in 3D. Which is about as surprising getting wet in a thunder storm.
Speaking of thunder storms, looks like Thor’s in for a big fight, as the first official synopsis for Thor: The Dark World has been released, so now we can at least know exactly why he was stomping on that poor man’s face in the recently released behind the scenes pics.
Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962.
“Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
There are actually a couple of big reveals there, as “a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself” and “Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand” cannot be referring to Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith. He’s old and powerful, but nowhere on that level. I’m calling it right now: We’ll be seeking Surtur in this movie.
For the uninitiated, here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Surtur:
Surtur is a fire demon native to the extradimensional plane of Muspelheim land of the fire demons, one of the nine worlds in Norse mythology, and first appears in the title Journey Into Mystery, where it is claimed he sits at the end of the world waiting for the end of time where he can slay men and gods.
Surtur was depicted as an immense and malevolent elemental fire demon whose power was of apocalyptic proportions. Standing over 1,000 ft. in height, Surtur possessed strength and durability by far surpassing that of Thor; the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force; molecular manipulation such as transforming his fingers into serpents; levitation and inter-dimensional travel
Surtur possesses the giant sword Twilight, also known as the Sword of Doom, composed of a god-like metal known as Scabrite, which can only be found in the mines of Sutur’s realm. The sword is magical, capable of manipulating vast amounts of mystical energy, such as shattering dimensional barriers and inhibiting Odin’s powers.
Yeah, I’d say that’s a big enough threat. From what I can see, the script for Thor appears to be borrowing quite a number of elements from writer Walt Simonson’s famed run on the comic, during which Thor faced a number of tests, including Malekith, but it was eventually revealed that Surtur was the behind the scenes big bad.
Out of the entire next round of Marvel movies, Thor: The Dark World is the one that I’m definitely looking forward to the most, and with the possibility of Surtur showing up, my excitement levels have just gone through the roof.
