Pack your bags, and make sure you kiss your kids goodnight tonight, people. It will probably be the last time. Turns out those pesky apocalypse predicting Mayans had it right all along: The world really is about to end.

How do I know? Simple, they’re making another Ernest movie.

Some of the young ‘uns around these parts probably have no idea who Ernest P. Worrell is, so allow me to do a quick (but painful –  at least for me, I was never a fan) refresher, with this little snippet from 1998’s Ernest in the Army, the last Ernest film to be made.

Lead actor Jim Varney passed away in 2000, but film studios have never let a little thing like death get in the way of profit. Which is why Variety is reporting that Ruckus Films is looking to reboot the comedy series now.

The reboot will be produced by the character’s creator John Cherry (who originally created him for an ad campaign, before he got so famous that he spun off into more mainstream media), and a script focusing on Ernest’s long lost son is being penned by Dan Ewen. A new poster for the reboot – spoofing The Bourne Legacy – was revealed, as well as Ewen making this statement about the reboot:

“Ernest was this plucky little engine that could — against all odds. Ernest struck a nerve, one we’re going to revisit. We plan to honor the originals and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny.”

No word yet on release dates or casting.

  1. Man I used to love Ernest when I was a kid, I think that I watched the Ernest Halloween movie a million times as a kid. The scene where the big bad troll (oh so relevant today) runs into Ernest’s car door without him knowing was maybe the funniest thing I had seen, I remember us rewinding that part and watching it over and over again.

SO yeah, about a remake… who knows how on earth the will make an Ernest type vibe feel relevant now. That’s a tall order indeed. Then again, if they target young kids it could work just fine,

Sheesh, they have a better chance of Mork and Mindy being recognised. But let them go ahead. It will serve as further proof that anything with ‘Son Of’ in the title is a bad idea.
