If there’s one type of film that is always welcome in the remake circles, it’s an Orwellian movie. After all, there’s no such thing as paranoid people, as they’re just persons who have all the facts.

Big brother worries aside, one such George Orwell tale which hasn’t been on the screen for quite a few years now, is his well crafted take on communism, in the form of Animal Farm. It looks like that hiatus is over though, as Andy Serkis is preparing to don the mocap suit once more to bring the tale to life again.

Let’s hope Zwelinzima Vavi doesn’t hear about this.

Serkis is planning on a new take for the age old tale of greedy socialist pigs and beyond stupid farm animals, as he told THR that “We’re keeping it fable-istic and aimed at a family audience. We are not going to handle the politics in a heavy-handed fashion”.

It is going to be emotionally centred in a way that I don’t think has been seen before. The point of view that we take will be slightly different to how it is normally portrayed and the characters, We are examining this in a new light.

We are in proof-of-concept stage at the moment, designing characters and experimenting on our stage with the designs.

Sounds interesting, even if the lack of political overtones does undermine the core concept of the book slightly. How Serkis and his mo-cap studio, The Imaginarium, manages to pull off pigs in suits and militant livestock though, should be interesting.

But while Serkis is busy plotting a barnyard revolution, he’ll also be seen once againb, in the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey later this year, as Gollum.

Or his digital self will. I’m starting to think that Serkis is actually just one big computer simulation.
