James Cameron breaks his "Avatar only" promise with THE INFORMATIONIST

James Cameron is a liar. Last time I checked, he was telling everybody that if a movie didn’t involve 8ft tall blue cat people, he wasn’t making it. “Strictly in the Avatar business”, I believe was how he put it.

But I guess the business is branching out, because as soon as Cameron wraps up Avatar 2 & 3, he will be tackling an adaptation of Taylor Stevens’ Grammar-Nazi angering novel, The Informationist.

Stevens novel was a bestseller in 2011 and deals with “Vanessa “Michael” Munroe, an information specialist, whose work is in-demand by corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. When a Texas oil billionaire hires her to find his daughter who vanished in Africa four years ago, Munroe finds herself back in the lands of her childhood. Betrayed, cut off from civilization, and left for dead, she must come face-to-face with the past that she’s tried for so long to forget.”

Now if that description didn’t entice you to want to see/know more, then I’m sorry to report that this rather horrible trailer that was made for the book probably won’t be helping either.

This looks like the type of story that Cameron can crank out in his sleep, so maybe he’s just going to use this as a bit of a palate cleanser after spending the next couple years on Pandora.

Now while I haven’t read the novel myself, I do kind of have a concern that a movie based on a story about a strong female lead with a mysterious past, who is good with information, and gets hired by a rich industrialist to find a relative of his that’s been missing for years, may sound awfully familiar to audiences, wouldn’t you say?

Cameron will be producing the film alongside Jon Landau for 20th Century Fox, but they have yet to appoint a writer to adapt the novel.

Well 4 hasn’t been confirmed 100% yet. Sigourney Weaver thinks it will definitely happen, but Cameron and co said it’s just a possibility.

Yeah. He said in an interview in Sept that he hasn’t put pen to paper yet (unlike 2/3 which he is going to shoot together, ala Lord of the Rings) but if 4 is made it would be a prequel. Which could be quite cool 🙂

The premise for The Informationist strikes me as something that Cameron is more likely to produce than direct. It doesn’t have the promise of the grand-scale action that has featured in each and every mainstream film he has made.

Unlike the other “Big Movie Directors”, I really enjoy Cameron’s movies. But like Justin said, the premise for this doesn’t sound like his style.
