Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

So there’s this new reality TV show called the American Presidential Elections, you may have heard of it. So far the characters are interesting, and there’ve been a couple of plot twists (The chair was really empty?!) but they’re running out of good storylines real fast. Thankfully, prominent Liberal and Lord of the Geeks, Joss Whedon, is here to breathe some life into it!

Back in 2010, at the time newly created animation house Bedrock Studios was set produce a new animated feature title Turkeys. That project stalled though, for a number of reasons, but now it looks like it’s back on the cards with Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson lending their voices to the lead characters with Horton Hears A Who‘s Jimmy Hayward on board to direct. (Hayward also directed Jonah Hex, but we just kind of forget that movie ever existed.)

According to the original synopsis back when it was first announced, the CGI animated turkey tale is “an irreverent, hilarious, adventurous buddy comedy where two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the menu for good.”

Kevin Feige was over at USA Today, where he was just singing the praises of Sir Ben Kingsley, who will playing the villainous Mandarin in Iron Man 3.

“On his last take of his first full day as the Mandarin, when they yelled ‘Cut!’ the entire crew burst into applause, spearheaded by Mr. Downey himself. It was pretty amazing to see that.”

“That’s what you get when you hire Sir Ben Kingsley. He’s so excited about his part and so into this character, and frankly just scaring the heck out of everybody. They’re like, ‘You’ve broken us out of our skeptical malaise!’ “

Firstly, from what little snippets we’ve seen, Kingsley is definitely going to own the movie, and secondly, I’m sorry Feige but nobody, and I mean nobody, ever says “You’ve broken us out our skeptical malaise!”.

The fellas over at Badass Digest have put together this rather cool infographic (nymphographic) recounting all of James Bond’s sexual conquests through the years. Irrespective of what you may think of George Lazenby’s turn as 007, it’s clear now that the man’s pimp hand was strong.

Upside Down, the rather interesting sci-fi romantic drama that everybody, including us (here’s our original post about it to refresh your memory), seems to have forgotten about, has popped up on the radar again. It looks like the film was pulled back to work an extra dimension into the visuals. Variety reports that Millennium Entertainment has acquired the US distribute rights, and that the film will be released sometime in early 2013, now in both 2D and 3D variants.

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol ended 2011 with a bang, both creatively and in turn of box-office receipts, so it’s only natural that questions about a Mission Impossible 5 are going to get asked. Which is exactly what Top Film did when they spoke to Hollywood’s biggest small actor, Tom Cruise. The couch destroying star had this to say in response:

“Seeing an audience respond… to have that experience is really wonderful. “I started Mission: Impossible hoping I could make many of them. It’s a character that I can grow with. At that time it was the most expensive film in the history of Paramount Pictures, and the first film I was producing.”

“It’s been pretty exciting. I’ll make a bunch of those. I’ll make as many as people want to see… because they’re very challenging, and so much fun to make.”

“We’re already working on different images. Talking conceptually. I love travelling around promoting different movies because I’m always looking at different places, and I always walk around to see the city. I look at architecture, subways… coming up with different sequences.”

Put director Brad Bird back in the driving seat and you can be sure you’ll get another day 1 ticket purchase from me.

Regular reader and sometimes contributor James Francis recently remarked on the new Evil Dead remake trailer – which had so many people frothing at the mouth – that it looked pretty similar to a lot of other recent horror remakes. Well, looks like he wasn’t the only one as the guys over at Movies.com ask Why Are People Loving the Look of Evil Dead Over Similar Horror Remakes?

Jimmy O from JoBlo (unintentional rhyme) landed this rather cool interview with rapper turned filmmaker RZA and Eli Roth about RZA’s completely crazy looking kung fu directorial debut The Man With the Iron Fists, which Roth produced. They talk about the multi-hyphenate RZA balancing his life as writer, director, actor and musician, as well as what their idea behind the film’s aesthetic was.

Talking about Quentin Tarantino, the fan favourite director has revealed that he’s thinking of doing another film in the Inglourious Basterds/Django Unchained trilogy. Oh you, didn’t know it was a trilogy? Well, apparently, it kinda is.

“I don’t know, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained bespeak a trilogy. As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”

Movies.com have put together 5 Ways To Make A Great Mass Effect Movie and pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Pastafarian for life!) that Hollywood takes notice, as they really nailed it.

Did you know that Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street was based on a true story? How about Child’s Play and The Hills Have Eyes? Because they apparently were. Thank you Flavorwire for making me just that much more scared of the world.

Pajiba asks Is 2012 The Year Of The Box-Office Bomb? “Yes. Yes it totally @#$ing is!”, Taylor Kitsch’s bank manager answered back.

Empire have scored this new image from The Wolverine showing off Hugh Jackman’s mutton-chopped mutant superhero stuck in some kind of underground pit/prison. Pay careful attention though, and you’ll notice that Wolvie is sporting his bone claws here. That would mean that either chronologically, this scene takes place prior to the Weapon X program where he had the adamantium metal bonded to his bones, which is the likeliest explanation, or they were somehow shoehorning in the “Fatal Attractions” comic book storyline. That’s the one where Magneto ripped the adamantium right out of his body, not the film where Glenn Close boils a rabbit.

I’m sure that you guys were all probably wondering where War Machine was during all those crazy battles in The Avengers, right? What, just me and that sweaty guy in the back with the cheese curls breath? Well, that’s OK, because Marvel are releasing a comic just for the two of us, detailing exactly why Rhodey wasn’t kicking alien ass at Iron Man’s side.

If I told you that a new documentary was titled Top Priority: The Terror Within and asked you to guess what it was about, you’d probably say something about terrorists or corrupt governments, and you wouldn’t be too far off actually. There would just be one rather crucial part that you’d be missing: How all that relates to the death of actress Brittany Murphy.

No, you did not read that wrong.

The new documentary by Asif Akbar, which will air at the American Film Market festival next week, apparently “tells of Julia Davis, a national security whistleblower who was falsely declared a ‘Domestic Terrorist’ and subjected to retaliation of unprecedented proportions by the Department of Homeland Security. The events were chronicled in the book  ‘Unsafe At Any Altitude.’ Murphy, a friend of Davis’ and one of Hollywood’s most promising young actresses at the time, was a witness  in the former Border Protection Agent’s litigation against the Department of Homeland Security. The film describes how, after the actress provided a written statement in support of Julia Davis, Murphy was targeted by the DHS/ICE. Soon after, the DHS attempted to deport [Murphy’s husband] Simon Monjack. Not long thereafter, both husband and wife died under rather suspicious circumstances. Top Priority hopes to shed some light on what really happened to Murphy, as well as the actress’ husband Simon Monjack. The film also, like Michael Moore’s enlightening Fahrenheit 911, hopes to expose some of the dirty dealings and unreported activities of the U.S Government.”

I believe they’ll be handing out tinfoil hats instead of 3D glasses for this one.

We finish off today on this rather fantastic sci-fi short film, Seed, written and directed by Tyson Wade Johnston and starring Justin Zachary, who also co-wrote the script, as a lone astronaut, embarking on a solitary mission on a desolate alien planet where he discovers a new threat that could wipe out all life on its surface.

The film is more atmosphere and tension than bombastic action, and boasts great world building and top class effects with a very capable solo performance from Zachary.

Tarantino is always talking about possible sequels/trilogies. He mused about doing a real Kill Bill sequel where Copperhead’s little girl comes back, all grown up, for revenge. He also toyed with bringing the two Vega brothers – portrayed by John Travolta and Michael Madsen in Pulp fiction and Reservoir Dogs respectively – into their own movie.

So with Tarantino, talk is cheap.
