Yes, I know. This is “The MOVIES dot co dot za” so reporting on TV series is not really our thing. However, when it’s a TV series further exploring one of cinema’s greatest characters, and being portrayed by one of the greatest actors around today, well then you can be damn sure it’ll get a headline or two around here.

So grab yourself some fava beans and maybe a chianti or two (fhfhfhfhfhfhffffhhh) and check out these first shots fromNBC’s upcoming drama series, Hannibal.

The show is being produced by Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me showrunner Bryan Fuller, and will act as a prequel to Hannibal Lecter’s cinematic adventures, exploring the  relationship between a not-yet-convicted-of-eating-people Lecter (played by Danish acting superstar Mads Mikkelsen) and a young FBI Agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as they take a bite out of crime on a weekly basis. Get it? Bite out of cime? Because Lecter is a cannibalistic killer and- Oh never mind, just check out the synopsis and look at the pictures, all courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller (“Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”), based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.

Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham’s unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone – even psychopaths. He seems to know what makes them tick. But when the mind of the twisted killer he’s pursuing is too complicated for even Will to comprehend, he enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country. Armed with the uncanny expertise of the brilliant doctor, Will and Hannibal (known as a serial killer only to the audience) form a brilliant partnership and it seems there’s no villain they can’t catch. If Will only knew…

Starring brilliant young actor Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, “Hannibal” will breathe new life into a deadly classic.

Unlike his predecessors, Brian Cox in Manhunter and most famously Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (the movie not this series), Mikkelsen appears to have ditched the slicked-back widow’s peak that Lecter has previously been sporting. To be fair this makes a lot of sense, as chronologically, this story takes place before anybody has cottoned on to what Lecter’s favourite snack is, and everybody knows that having that much product in your hair is a dead giveaway for deep-seated psychological problems.

Along with the shot of Mikkelsen we also get some of a blood splattered Hugh Dancy as Graham and Laurence Fishburne as his FBI boss Jack Crawford.

The series’ first season has been commissioned for just 13 episodes, which sounds like Fuller has trimmed the fat off this tale quite a bit. Hard Candy director David Slade has directed the pilot episode, but it’s still unknown when it and it’s subsequent 12 other episode would air.
