Steven Soderbergh may be planning on taking a break from film-making, but at least his sabbatical will go out with a bang. One of his current films that will be releasing before he takes some R and R is Side Effects, which stars Rooney Mara in a tale that urges everyone to pay attention to the small print on a bottle of tablets.

“Side Effects” is a psychological thriller set in the world of the pharmaceutical industry. A troubled woman (Mara) who is coping with the imminent release of her husband (Tatum) from jail begins to take a new prescription drug with unforeseen consequences.
There’s quite a few other Soderbergh faces in the mix here, such as Law, Tatum and Catherine Zeta Jones, and it looks like this might be another trademark thriller from the man.
Side Effects is out next year March.

Gah, the trailer is auto-set to 720p. Give that a look it it buffers poorly…
From the trailer alone I’m not sure what this is about. Drug trails? Naughty psychiatrists? Channing Tatum’s widow?
It kinda feels like the trailer has been spiced up a lot more to sell what is really a slow-burn drama/thriller.

Soderbergh has been keeping the actual story for this movie tightly under wraps, so I think the trailer was especially cut so as not to give anything concrete away.

Much as I praise that decision – after all, we all hate trailers that give it all away – this one really made me feel less interested in the film.

Yeah, it’s a fine line. You have to show enough to get viewers excited, but not enough to tell them what they’re getting excited about. His faults aside, JJ Abrams is a master of this.
