Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Years of anime watching have taught me that everything sounds infinitely more badass when spoken by a deep voiced Japanese man. He could be reading a recipe for scones, and you’d suddenly feel the need to just randomly roundhouse kick stuff. Case in point, this new international trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which would already have been considered great with its emotive score and amazing new visuals. But throw in the Japanese, and you have yourself a tiny little epic.

Awards season (or as Hollywood cocaine dealers refer to it, “Second Christmas”) is around the corner, and as such a number of films will be starting their pre-Awards “For your consideration” marketing push. Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight Rises is one of the first out the gates, and they’re certainly covering all their bases, as they have offered up Chris Nolan’s final Batman film for just about every category there is (I’m pretty sure that if they could, they would throw their name into the “Best Cup of Coffee Made By a Red-Haired Intern On a Tuesday” award). Personally, while I think that there are definitely a few technical nominations (and possibly even wins) coming their way, I don’t expect to see Batman up for any of the big awards.

Ok, so chances are that you’ve probably not watched Skyfall yet. Me neither. We can go be sad together later with our other pal Jack Daniels. In the meantime though, bookmark this link of director Sam Mendes giving a pretty in-depth spoiler filled interview with AICN’s Beak, for when you eventually watch the film at the end of the month.

Humour Mill has confirmed that Tropic Thunder star Brandon T. Jackson (BOOTY SWEAT!) will indeed be playing the son of Axel Foley in CBS’s TV adaptation of 80’s Eddie Murphy smash hit Beverley Hills Cop. Murphy is supposed to be cameo-ing in the show from time to time, with his character now Chief of Police in Detroit.

We’ve seen two posters already for Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful, but now – along with a few new images – Disney have unveiled a third poster that reveals that the earlier two were merely the end pieces of a triptych. The new section features all the principal cast members in costume, but unfortunately sheds no light on the mystery of which one of the three leading ladies – Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz – end up being the infamous Wicked Witch of the West.

Want to listen to Howard Shore’s entire soundtrack for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? Well, you’re in luck because thanks to Empire you can now do exactly that. There’s just a slight, teensy weensy catch though. Due to copyright restrictions not only can we not embed the widget over here, but once you play it over on Empire’s site, you need to listen to all of it. I mean, all of it. There’s no way to select individual tracks and if you even try to skip forward or back, the entire thing resets and starts playing from the beginning.

Anne Hathaway has confirmed that she will indeed be starring in Steve Spielberg’s upcoming Robopocalypse. When she’ll be starring in it though, is a whole other matter.

“If Robopocalypse happens I will be in it, and I believe it’s quite real, though you never want to hang your hat on anything.”

“Whenever I’m taking time off, I always joke to my team that I’m on vacation unless Steven Spielberg calls. And I was on vacation and Spielberg called. So I was like, ‘OK, put my money where my mouth is!”

Maria Bello has been cast as one of the leads in an untitled James Wan (Saw, Insidious) produced thriller, which will see her starring as a police psychologist who teams with with a detective to solve the bloody murder of college kids in abandoned house, with the only survivor – and police’s main suspect – pleading innocent and claiming that the house was responsible for the murders. Because that’s what houses do, right?

With Wan’s schedule pretty full, what with scaring people with his soon to be released The Conjuring as well as making mullets and pocket knives cool again in his proposed MacGuyver reboot, the directorial reins has been handed over to relatively unknown director Will Canon. I unfortunately don’t know much about him except that he’s merely a “-y” away from having a great porno name.

Director Bryan Singer has teased the first look at the eponymous giants of Jack the Giant Slayer when he tweeted this photo taken in the editing suite. Along with the gigantic (not literally) pic, he also tweeted another which gave another look at Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class, Warm Bodies) the big person killing Jack.

Is it just me, or is that giant sporting a “Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction” style afro?

If there’s two things that Keira Knightley is known for it’s pouting and period dramas (No, not that kind of period dramas, you sicko, I’m talking about the corsets and top hats kind). And while she doesn’t appear to have any inclination to change her face, she is hoping to take a break from all that aristocracy with the upcoming new feature film take on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, as she explained to Collider.

“I got to the end of ‘Anna Karenina’ and realised that I’d been sort of doing pieces of work that were incredibly dark and I pretty much died in a lot of them for five years. I wanted this year to be the year of positivity and pure entertainment, and ‘Jack Ryan’ is a really great, old school, Hollywood thriller and a piece of pure entertainment.”

Ironically, Jack Ryan is being directed and starred in (as the villain) by Kenneth Branagh, a man who for the longest time was merely associated with Shakespearan productions.

It’s been revealed that Sylvester Stallone apparently took time out of his one man crusade to put the “men” back in entertainment, as he’s just finished up shooting his scenes for a new ensemble drama titled Reach Me. Not much is known about the indie project except that it deals with a group of people who all share a connection to a self-help book written by a retired American football coach. How Stallone got involved is that the film was written and directed by his longtime friend John Herzfeld who first acted with him in 1986’s Cobra, and most recently filmed the Making Of documentary for The Expendables.

One of the biggest films of the year has been the French comedy The Intouchables. The film about a fun-loving bu down on his luck ex-con who takes on the job of personal caregiver to a quadriplegic millionaire despite not having any nursing skills, earned tonnes of critical praise and over $400 million dollars at the international box-office. Which of course means that just like night follows day, an American remake is just around the corner.

And the first bit of casting news has just broken with word that Darryn’s most favourite actor in the whole wide world, Chris Tucker, is in talks to play the ex-con Driss, a role originally played by Omar Sy. Sy won the Cesar Award (the French equivalent of the Oscars) for his performance so Tucker’s mouth will have a whole lot to live up to.

Remember that weird grindhouse styled trailer for The Canyons, the Bret Easton Ellis penned and Paul Schrader directed film starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen? Well, things are getting even weirder. A new full trailer has been revealed and for some strange reason that I cannot think of due to the current lack of recreational drugs at my disposal, it’s all in black and white, and structured like a trailer from the 1950’s.

That’s it. I’m calling bullshit on this entire thing. Surely this can’t be real movie? I mean, I’ve seen better acting from those extras in pornos who don’t actually get to have sex.

Kervyn, when you’re right, you’re right. Deep Voiced Japanese Voice Over Artist definitely adds another layer of epic to that Hobbit trailer. Holy crap that was epic
