POMPEII might be in for a little Snow

What do the Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat and Aliens vs. Predator have in common? All were directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and none can be considered Oscar material. Fun, but definitely not films for the honour role. Well, he has his eyes set on period disaster film called Pompeii, and will star none other than Jon Snow himself, Kit Harington.

Pompeii will be set around the time of the famous volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed the city, and will see the main protagonist Milo (Harington) as a slave dreaming about freedom and marrying his master’s daughter. When Vesuvius erupts, he heads into Pompeii to save his girlfriend and best friend, a gladiator who is trapped inside a coliseum.

Well, this does seem like something that is right up Harington’s alley, as he has more than enough experience wielding swords and running after maidens in distress from his time on the fantastic Game of Thrones series. A slight spanner in the works could be the fact that Paul W.S. Andersen is at the helm, who seems more comfortable with ruining game-turned-film franchises than something more epic in scope. Okay, maybe I’m being a bit harsh on Anderson, he is definitely proficient as a director, but when he has writing and producing duties we can be quite sure of the fact that about 50% of the film will he in slow motion.

All that said, I’m glad to see Kit Harington break into the movie circuit. He has potential to grow even more popular than he already is and if he capitalises well, he could be one of 2013’s big breakout stars. He does star in Silent Hill: Revelation though, so things might not be off to a great start.

What we can all be sure of though is that Paul W.S. Anderson will find a spot for his wife Milla Jovovich and hey, as a part of the male population of this plan, I definitely won’t be complaining. What do you guys say? Does Anderson have the chops to pull off an ambitious epic such as Pompeii, or will it just turn into another slow motion CGI-fest?

I often wondered how many people think that Paul WS Anderson and Paul Thomas Anderson are the same person. It must drive them insane to think that the guy capable of such amazing work as Magnolia, Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood is the same guy that did Resident Evil and the latest Three Musketeers.
