Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

I’m feeling a bit under the weather today (which is a euphemism for my large intestine trying to kill me), so instead of me typing up a new Star Wars sequel update, I’ll just let George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy tell you themselves. I mean, it’s not as if Georgie-boy has anything else to do besides count his money and work on his ever-expanding collection of chins.

Blade Trinity was easily the worst of the 3 Blade films. I guess that might have been a result of star Wesley Snipes smoking weed all day, only using body doubles except for close-ups and choking writer David S Goyer like he owed him money. Oh, you didn’t know about all of that? Well, let Patton Oswalt tell you the funniest behind the scenes story you’ve read in ages.

With Skyfall moonraking in all the box-office money to become the most successful Bond film of all time, calls have already gone out to ask if director Sam Mendes would return for another. Thus far he’s been pretty reticent about it, but it seems like longtime Bond screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade – for which Skyfall was their last Bond script – may have given a sliver of hope for those wanting Mendes back in the director’s chair:

“We’re very happy to have done five Bond movies, I think we’ve gotten it to a good place. I know that John Logan and Sam Mendes have come up with a plot for another one, which takes the pressure off because these films take up a lot of time.”

Last time I checked, Mendes was not in the habit of coming up with stories for other directors, so could it be that he’s actually returning?

It’s been all quiet on the Elysium front lately, and with the release date on local boy Neil “District 9” Blomkamp’s highly anticipated 2nd feature film pushed back to August next year, chances are we’d probably only see a trailer in early 2013. So to tide things over until then, here’s a new photo of Matt Damon with a big gun.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman has been passing out the Michael Bay kool-aid, making some rather ambitious claims about the new Bay produced and Jonathan Liebesman directed Ninja Turtles movie. He’s spoke to both NBC and The Examiner and laid down the following hyperbole.

“Jonathan Liebesman is going to make a great film. From what I’ve seen of the script, it’s fantastic. Michael Bay has made some great and intense movies. We’re talking about being inspired by movies like ‘The Avengers’ for scope and roots origin and ‘The Raid: Redemption’ for fight scenes and ‘Rise for the Apes’ as far as computer-quality style.”

“I like to answer this by basically telling the fans first and foremost not to worry, this will be a great TMNT film. Much like many thirty year old concepts, the TMNT’s have been re-invented a number of times, some were stronger than others, but if you look at what Viacom/Nickelodeon has done/allowed to happen with the new TMNT animated TV series, and the new IDW comic series, each has a slightly new and refreshed take on the “core concept,” the new film with be the same, a film “well placed” in the TMNT lore the fans will enjoy. If we learned nothing else from one of my favorite comic book based films, The Avengers, that there’s a lot to be said about never forgetting that core concept and core fan-base.”

Here’s a new Red Band featurette for This is 40, the new Judd Apatow directed spinoff from his 2007 hit Knocked Up. If talking about sex and constipation in the same breath sounds like your kind of a fun night, then this is the movie for you.

It looks like if you want to get your trailer geek out on, then a screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the place to be. We’ve already heard how the first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness will be attached to the film, but now it’s been confirmed by Emileeid that the first theatrical trailers for both The Wolverine and Man of Steel will also be making their debuts.

The site also states that we’ll be seeing new theatrical trailers for Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer next Tuesday and The Hangover 3 in early December.

As a way of combating in-movie texters and callers, cinema chain Cinemark have launched a smartphone app, called Cinemode, which patrons install on their phones and then launch as a movie starts. If by the end of the movie, Cinemode reveals that the phone was not used for the entire duration of the movie, the patron is eligible for a prize, like discounts and freebies.

Seriously people, is this the world we’re living in? Do people now need to be bribed to not use their phones during a movie?!

Here are a couple of new pics for Vin Diesel’s muscles and cars sequel Fast and Furious 6, one of which unsurprisingly shows Diesel sitting in the driver’s seat of a muscle car. I’m guessing the second pic is about Diesel and co-star Paul Walker talking about how they’re going to drive muscle cars.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart has officially signed on to the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman. Unsurprisingly, direct Rupert Sanders is no where to be found. You may recall that the internet was broken in half under a deluge of teenage girl tears when it was discovered that Stewart had cheated on Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson with the very married Sanders. Pattinson and Stewart have since made up, but Sanders’ wife gave him an ultimatum to either cut all ties from Stewart on a professional level or hit the road. It’s an easy guess as to which choice he made.

The script for the sequel has apparently already been written, but no other schedule details or dates have been revealed. Hopefully there’s enough time left for Stewart to learn how to smile like a normal human being, because I’ve never seen anybody as awkward at it as she was in SWATH. It wasn’t so much a smile as it was a seizure in slow motion.

Speaking of Twilight, Darryn normally does the box-office round up on Mondays, but that’s usually for the US box office. Down here in SA though, this weekend past saw some local records get destroyed by the latest chapter in the sparkly vampire movie franchise. Approximately 275 000 of you went to see The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, giving it a weekend box-office take of R10.9 million, which is the biggest three-day opening in South African history by 36%.

In comparison, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 took 5 days to hit the R11 million mark when it opened last year.

For his next film, Only God Forgives, nobody can accuse Ryan Gosling of just being a pretty face. Teaming up again with his Drive director Nicolas Winding-Refn, Gosling plays a former kickboxer and gangster living in Bangkok, who goes looking for revenge for the murder of his brother. What he discovers, judging by the previously released pics and this new poster, is a world of violence. In his face.

EW brings word that Mike Meyers has finished writing his first draft of Wayne’s World 3. The script is said to focus on “Wayne and Garth coping with the new era of music, transitioning from access cable to streaming internet (ala Youtube) and Wayne balancing his marriage to Cassandra.” Party on!

Famed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar (Matador, Volver, The Skin I Live In ) may have made his name with comedies and dramas, but he might just be working on a sci-fi project as well. Almodovar was in London to receive a belated BAFTA for The Skin I Live In (which technically could be considered a sci-fi/horror)and to deliver a lecture at the institute when he revealed his possible plans:

“The way I would like to do a science-fiction movie is to present something impossible in a real, domestic way. I am still young enough to make one. I have ideas for the genre. One of the scripts currently on my desk is of that genre, so I hope to make it.”

Just don’t expect those hopes to materialize into an actual film anytime soon though. Almodovar is well known for taking his time with projects, something which he readily admitted:

“I live with my stories for many years. I write more like a novelist than a screenwriter.”

As to what type of sci-fi film he intends to make, well the director cited The Invasion of the Body Snatchers as the type of movie he likes.

There are so many awesome science-fiction movies out there, that it’s just about impossible to watch all of them. So if you’re tired of having your friends pointing and laughing at you for your lack of knowledge, then this Supercut video showing over 100 movies in just over 6 minutes might be a good place to start. OK, so you basically only get snippets of a movie, but hey, it wasn’t as if your friends were actually going to stop pointing and laughing at you anyway.
