Okay guys so, the missus has decided it’s movie night and it’s your pick…but you know that watching Die Hard for the tenth time just won’t cut it. Why don’t you win yourself some much-needed brownie points and pick on the of the following films that – lo and behold – you don’t have to cringe watching, and your friends won’t berate you about watching them…except maybe the uninformed ones. There’s always one.

Here’s five girl movies that guys don’t have to feel bad watching:

Election

The list is starting off strong! One of only a few Reese Witherspoon films I like, she stars as a manipulative and over-achieving high school girl that is running unopposed for student body elections. Enter Matthew Broderick’s teacher character Jim, who takes a dislike in the girl and sets up Chris Pine to run against her.

With an R rating, this films is a lot darker than it seems. The missus will enjoy it, and you will reap the benefits of watching a film that is pure, malicious class.

Jerry Maguire

Off all the films on the list, the missus might be slightly opposed at Jerry Maguire being selected, until she finds out the film is essentially a love story between Renee Zellweger and Tom Cruise. Guys? You have a bit of american football to keep you occupied and once you realise it is a Cameron Crowe film, you can rest easy. The film is all heart, but all entertainment too.

Tom Cruise stars as sports agent who gets fired when he embraces a new philosophy, and attempts to keep his career alive with his single client and a secretary from his old firm. Show me the money!

Love Actually

Okay guys, here’s a big ace in the hole. Richard Curtis’ Love Actually is so laced with drama and sugary sweetness that it should be nigh unwatchable to guys but it really isn’t. With a stellar cast, Love Actually manages to be a Christmas film, a romance and a drama all rolled into one but also manages to be particularly good. Did I mention Alan Rickman and Liam Neeson is in it?

The missus will love you for watching it with her and hey, you will enjoy it too. If you reach the end and you aren’t grinning ear from ear, you just aren’t human.

Chocolat

Chocolat might seem to be the most inaccessible film on the list for guys, but it definitely is the wild card. The film is 100% percent romance but the loophole is this – even if you choose to completely ignore the romantic element of the film, Chocolat is beautifully filmed and also has a stellar cast and a surprisingly great story. The missus would never expect you to watch it with her and chances are you will love it too.

A chocolatier and her daugher settle in a small French village run by the overly-zealous mayor and sets up a chocolaterie during lent, which causes a big upset in the village. Even more controversially, she starts befriending the town pariah’s and the river folk, leading the mayor to try and close her shop. Oh, and did I mention the film stars Johnny Depp, Alfred Molina, Judy Dench, Peter Stormare and Carrie-Ann Moss, to name a few? It’s all starting to make sense now…

Downfall? The movies poster. Yeeeugh!

Mean Girls

Mean girls is the epitome of what we have been talking about today. It has all the elements which should make it 100% a girls movie but when you factor in a great screenplay by Tina Fey, the lines start to blur. The films stars a (pre-drugs) Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried and Lizzy Caplan. Interested now?

When a girl that has never been to an American high school starts, she gets caught up in its extremely complicated social circles and catches the attention of the school Queen Bee, played by McAdams.

This movie shouldn’t be watchable at all. It has girls talking about boys, girls talking about fashion, girls being bitchy…but all delivered in such an over-the-top, irony-drenched fashion that it ultimately becomes hilarious.

Yes, guys – this is a SNL film through-and-through. Don’t tell the lady!

Confession time: I have probably seen Love Actually close to 10 times. Except for when I originally saw it in the cinema (with my wife of course), I’ve never intentionally sat down to watch it ever again, but it’s been repeated on TV enough times and every time I channel surf to it, I always end up watching the whole thing.
Bill Nighy’s “Christmas is all around me” is still one of my favourite Xmas songs.

And if I watch other ‘Girly’ movies as a guy I should feel bad?

My favourites are 10 things I hate About You and Win a Date With Tad Hamilton. And Notting Hill. And I swear that’s all.
