While it’s true that things like story and character often take a backseat when it comes to martial arts movies, we still need some kind of context for all that fancy kicking and punching otherwise we may as well just go watch random bum fights. Since I’m in no mood to watch my family home videos again, I was quite happy to discover that some industrious soul has taken the Cantonese trailer released last week for Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters and reuploaded it with English subtitles, so now we can actually know what those people seemed so upset about.

As you may recall from our previous post, the film will be telling the story of near mythical status Kung Fu practitioner Ip Man, the real life master of Bruce Lee. There have already been a couple of films made about the legendary master’s life, the most famous being the two Ip Man films starring Donnie Yen, but this one will be differentiated through the auteur Wong’s stylish and artistic visuals. And while it may look really pretty, he sure ain’t skimping on the face punching though.

You can thank Andrew Chan over at Film Comment for the subtitles. Go Andrew, you Cantonese speaking hero to the masses, you!

Along with the new Anglicized trailer, we also get an eye catching new quad poster, that boasts the rather badass English tagline of “In martial arts there is no right or wrong; only the last man standing”. There are also a couple of character posters highlighting Tony Leung who plays Ip Man in the film and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon star Zhang Zhiyi as either his love interest or nemesis – that trailer wasn’t very clear on that – as well as a few new miscellaneous pieces of Wong Kar-Wai eye candy.

The Grandmaster opens in China on December 18th. Annapurna Productions has acquired the international distribution rights to the film, but have set a release date yet.

This trailer looks much better and the premise is good vintage kung-fu-flic stuff. I just hope the slow-mo stuff isn’t as overkill as it appears.
