More original X-Men trilogy cast members being sought for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE

Oh, how good it feels to be right! Well, maybe almost sort of right, but let’s not let something as insignificant as reality interfere with my gloating here.

You see when the title for X-Men: Days of Future Past was first announced, I came up with a crazy theory that we’d be seeing a crossover of sorts between the original X-men trilogy and the First Class universe. I hypothesize that the sequel would pull a page out of JJ Abrams’ “How To Reboot A Franchise Without Pissing Off The Fans” guidebook and use its comic book story counterpart’s time travelling tale to set up an alternate timeline.

Well, that theory ain’t looking so crazy any more.

Last week we heard how Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart would reprise their roles as the older Magneto and Professor X, respectively, alongside the younger versions of their characters established in First Class played by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, while the Hugh Jackman would also return as Wolverine after having a cameo in the first film. Well, to be exact all of us and Patrick Stewart heard about the casting, as it would seem that it’s news to him.

The irony of telepaths not knowing something that everybody else does notwithstanding, it was the first hint that writer/director Bryan Singer was indeed following my proposed plan.

And now, the biggest vindication of my geek ramblings may have been revealed by THR. The publication asserts that Singer is looking to recruit even more cast members of those original films. No actors/actresses are specifically mentioned to be in negotiations, but Halle Berry (who played Storm) and James Marsden (who played Cyclops) are mentioned as possibilities. Those negotiations are said to probably not be too complex, as the film would “straddle the 1960s setting established in 2011’s X-Men: First Class and the future of the original trilogy, where mutants are a hunted minority” and the actors would merely be looking to shoot short scenes that feature that dystopian future timeline. The actors are all also said to be rather eager to return, due to their fondness for working with Singer again.

Now Marsden’s name popping up, along with Stewart’s (maybe), could mean that Singer (who directed the first two X-Men films) is doing what any self respecting X-fan would have done and is completely ignoring the existence of Brett Ratner’s X-Men 3: The Last Stand. If you remember, both Cyclops and Prof. X met their demise in X3, although the post credits scene did reveal that Prof. X had transferred his consciousness to another body before dying. Cyclops though wasn’t so lucky and was infamously killed off-screen by his ex-lover Jean Grey. That slap in the face off-screen though, does mean that it’s possible that they could find some way to bring him back from “the dead”.

While my geek-out factor couldn’t be higher at the prospect of all of this, I know that this is going to be quite the task for Singer to pull off. But if there’s anybody that could do it, it’s the man who arguably kickstarted the entire superhero movie trend that’s been ruling the cinemas for the last few years.
