Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

To start off today, we have this video interview from Collider talking to some apparently random Pom about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which opened in theatres today. I’m assuming that this guy maybe made the coffee on set, and gave Peter Jackson backrubs or someth- OH HEY! That’s Richard Armitage, the guy who plays dwarven leader Thorin Oakenshield! Man, what a difference having the equivalent of an Afghan Hound on your face makes!

Wally Pfister has been Chris Nolan’s cinematographer for a long time, but it seems that in all those years he still hasn’t learnt enough of Nolan’s tricks yet. Pfister will soon be making his directorial debut with the mysterious Transcendence. Well, it was mysterious up until about 12 hours ago when some rather SPOILER heavy plot details showed up on the net. Chris Nolan’s Raging Sense of Secrecy was not pleased. The film will focus on “singularity, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence”  and will star Johnny Depp as a scientist named Will, whose “brain is uploaded into a computer” and that’s about all I know, as I was not prepared to read the rest of this very SPOILER heavy description.

But if stuff like narrative don’t bother you, then by all means click the link.

Joel Edgerton will be joining Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender for We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay’s upcoming western Jane Got A Gun. Which, just so we clear, has absolutely nothing to do with a certain Aerosmith song. One of the coveted Black List scripts, the film sees Portman as a young wife to an outlaw, who comes stumbling home, bullet riddled, after having a falling out with his crew. Now the gang has followed him home to finish the job, resulting in the young wife having  to call on the help of an ex-lover (Fassbender) to defend her homestead.

Edgerton, whose star has been rapidly on the rise lately, will be playing the lead poisoned husband.

We don’t really cover fashion around here, but this new Star Wars inspired jacket from Marc Ecko is certainly worth a mention. Where this, and you’ll be the envy of space pimps everywhere!

We managed to score an exclusive statement from Chewie himself, explaining how he feels about his likeness being used for this:

“HHHWWWWNNNNnnnnnggg! MHWWWRRRrrrrrrrRRRRGGGhhh….hhhhhhhhhHHHHHURRRGGHHHHMMMMMnnnnn!”

It’s a travesty that it took until 2011 for Gary Oldman to finally garner an Academy Award nomination, but if there was ever a movie where he deserved it, it was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The slow burn espionage flick was easily one of the best films of that year, and probably the most pure “spy film” in years. And since author John Le Carre, upon whose novel the movie is based, wrote plenty more material to choose from, it’s only likely that fans i.e me, will be clamouring for a sequel.

Luckily, original writer-director Tomas Alfredson and his fellow screenwriter feel the same way, as producer Eric Fellner explains:

“We are working on another one. [Producer] Tim Bevan is putting it together as we speak with [screenwriter] Peter Straughan and Tomas Alfredson, so yes it’s in development.”

“[Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy] did unbelievably well and it didn’t cost hardly anything… But things take time.  Tim is passionate about making sure we do another one.”

 Clamour, clamour, clamour!

Dani Menkin and Yonatan Ni’s documentary Dolphin Boy – which contrary to my expectations is not a mockbuster ripoff of Robert Rodriguez’s Shark Boy and Lava Girl – is getting turned into a feature narrative by Walt Disney. The Bucket List screenwriter Justin Zackham has been hired by the House of Mouse to adapt the tale of a troubled boy’s rehabilitation. Here’s the synopsis and trailer for the original :

Morad – a teenager from an Arab village in the north of Israel disconnects himself from humans following a violent attack that he experienced. As a last resort before hospitalization in a Mental Institution, he is taken by his devoted father to be treated with Dolphins in Eilat. Morad starts speaking again after months of silence, but he erases his past and refuses to go home to his awaiting mother. This documentary about the devastating havoc that human violence can wreak upon the human soul, and about the healing powers of nature and of love, was filmed over the course of the past four years.

If you’ve been holding out hope for more yellow-tracksuited violence Uma Thurman then you may have to just keep on hoping. Despite there being plans for Kill Bill Vol. 3 – which would revolve around Vernita Green’s (Vivica A. Fox) daughter going after The Bride (Uma Thurman) in retaliation for killing her mother –  back in 2009 already, director Quentin Tarantino is now singing a different tune:

“I don’t know if there’s ever going to be a Kill Bill. Vol 3. We’ll see, probably not though.”

Tarantino also dashed the hopes of anybody – all 10 of you – that was still hoping that Tarantino would direct a James Bond movie:

“NoCasino Royale was the one I wanted to direct, they missed their opportunity.”

Community’s Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs, has joined the Elizabeth Banks starring comedy Walk of Shame, which sees Banks as “a high-strung news anchor who, after a wild night out, finds herself locked out on the street with no phone, money, ID or car, and embarks on a series of misadventures as she finds her way to the most important job interview of her life.”

Jacobs will be playing the best friend of Banks’ character. Also, if you’re not watching Community it serves as empirical scientific evidence that you don’t like good things.

A couple new pics for Pixar’s upcoming prequel Monsters University have popped up online, which shows a younger Mike and Sully up to some monstrous shenanigans again. Oh that Mike and Sully. Whoo.

An Australian billionaire, by the name of James Packer, has clearly succumbed to the ink fumes from all his money, as he’s gone and given director Brett Ratner his very own production company. According to the journeyman director, the new company – imaginatively named RatPac Entertainment – which he now heads, intends to be a “major independent film company which not only has the ability to fully finance its films, but which also offers creative independence for its filmmakers.”

Ratner has always been a way better producer than he was a director, so if this means less chance of us seeing another X-Men 3, then I’m all for it.

And here’s a new poster for Jack The Giant Slayer, which shows the titular Jack about to stab the mouth of a stone-face giant. Or something.

And we end off today, with this interview with The Hobbit star Martin Freeman. Both he and Star Trek Into Dark villain who Khan’t be who you think he is, Benedict Cumberbatch, shot to international acclaim on the superb BBC series Sherlock, with Cumberbath in the title role and Freeman as Watson. Since that contemporary interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective, another, some would say “copycat” series named Elementary has popped up on American broadcaster ABC, with Jonathan Rhys Davies as Holmes, and in a gender bending turn of events, Lucy Liu as Watson.

But according to Freeman, there’s only one truly pretty Watson. Yes, I said pretty.
